One interesting thing in Onesimus is the bag of coins item, which gives you a bag of coins you can drop which will render (some?) enemies harmless if they touch it. From editing Jill levels the item's functionality exists in Jill also, just with glitched graphics. In Onesimus it appears in the equiv...
Thank you very much to K1n9_Duk3 for releasing this editor! More user friendly than the built-in level editor (though it's still rather amazing that a built-in level editor was hidden in the game with such a simple command to access it and yet was as far as I know undiscovered for years) or JillEdit...
Wow, it's really cool to see a Jill of the Jungle levelpack! I've always thought it had some gameplay elements that would be neat to experiment with in levels. These are some solid levels I'd say, I enjoyed playing them. On the long/large side, occasionally bordering on making me feel a bit lost, bu...
In Commander Keen 4, 5 and 6 there is text that pops up when you enter a level such as "Keen shivers along the Chasm of Chills". The Jill of the Jungle games have this also. What I'm curious about is whether there is any other game that does this.
Yeah, speaking of level editors for Jill of the Jungle: I decided to write one after my initial post about how Jill wouldn't be the best choice for somebody's very first level editor. It's currently in (closed) beta testing. That's exciting to hear. Back to the technical topic. Technically you coul...
Since each row of level data is a text string in the source and the game was written in Turbo Pascal, the compiler automatically merged duplicate strings to reduce memory usage. That means if the same text string appears as a row in multiple levels, you can't just change the string for one level wi...
Thank you very much for the information and advice. Starting off by experimenting with making a "dummy" editor to learn how to program the functionality of a level editor sounds like a good idea, as well as making a level information viewer to practice working with the level file format of a game. M...
I think a lot depends on what the target game is; the more complex the game, the more complex the level editor needs to be. For a tile-based game of Keen's type, with a simple tile layer and a sprite layer, the task isn't all too difficult. (Although that depends on whether you know any programming...
Not sure if this is the right board for this, but it is about game modding... Would anybody happen to know any resources about, or have any advice/general information about, programming level editors for existing games? How difficult, in a general sense, of a programming task is a level editor? Are ...

Should this thread be in The Theater rather than Miscellaneous? Anyway, I think I'm going to see it with family shortly before Christmas

Really neat idea. It's a shame that by the time I've seen this thread the deadline's pretty close and the computer I'm currently mostly using isn't set up for Keen modding/level editing/etc.

I gave it a quick try and I thought: decent, has potential, movement is perhaps a bit slow. When moving forward it feels as if you're pushing against something (not sure if I'm describing it well, but I think it might be that the speed of horizontal movement doesn't quite feel like it fits with the ...
