Re: [Update] Hocus Pocus Level editor v1.2
I finally got around to making Hocus mods playable in-browser , like I talked about in this other thread . Use the "Restore an old game" menu as a level select (all on Moderate difficulty), if you want to skip ahead. I included all the extant mods I could find... there's a great brown cas...

Re: Jill in the Enchanted Palace of Infinite Choice - a new level pack for JOTJ
I played through some of the levels in this last night. It's cool how much you're leaning into the things that are specific to Jill, like carrying gems into the map, and the specific jump heights for platforming puzzles, and of course the signs everywhere. Using various level tiles to portray locale...

Re: How were DOS games' graphics made?
Tilesets for both Jazz 1 and Jazz 2 were drawn in Deluxe Paint. Jazz 2 ships with many of the .anm files for both games that were later converted into the games' preferred tile formats (with additional information like palettes and collision masks). The Deluxe Paint resolution was 320x200, which is ...

Re: [Update] Hocus Pocus Level editor v1.2
Here's Shikadi's new episode in .hpm format. You can use the Hocus Editor's "Apply mod patch" tool to use the levels in any version of the game, not just the beta.
I played through the whole episode here.
Will have thoughts written down later, but very excited!

Museum obtains rare demo of id Software’s Super Mario Bros. 3 PC port
1990 demo was rejected by Nintendo but led to id's own Commander Keen . Part of what made the demo special was a John Carmack-coded scrolling algorithm that went way beyond the stuttering background movements and full-screen wipes you'd usually see in late '80s DOS games. "When looking at PC g...

Mods runnable in shareware versions?
Hey all, Nowadays there are various websites letting you play DOS games in your web browser, but they're all limited to the official releases and don't make it easy to edit the files involved like you can if you were to download the games instead. So I recently pieced together a javascript mod loade...

And I like how you used the unused Hocus items, what does umbrella exactly do? Nothing IIRC. It was supposed to be a shield, but none of the enemies got enough code to attack you with, so there was nothing for it to do. Anyway, it occurred to me that I actually had an entire custom level layout sit...

Re: [Release] Hocus Pocus Level editor
I must say making the editor was really fun for me, so I wonder why nobody have fully completed one in so many years. I think your Hocus Creation Station was the most-complete one among those I tried. Honestly, from what I recall I just got stuck figuring out UIs for some of the specialty files, pa...

Re: [Release] Hocus Pocus Level editor
Oh boy oh boy! I also ran into an editor called Hocus Creation Station, but it was quite hard to use and I don't think it could edit everything too. That was mine! Or rather, I started (but didn't finish) two or three separate HP level editors*, and I know one of them was called that but I don't rem...

Re: Dust: An Elysian Tale on Steam!
The game is by Dean, who is responsible for the Jazz 2 graphics. Only two tilesets, two enemies, the intro and ending cinematics, and the Lori sprites. Everything else was Nick Stadler. Unless he did the Holiday Hare '98 graphics too, which is possible, in which case three tilesets (and also editin...

Here's a link to them talking about the process of contacting the various musicians and companies. They're an established organization and have been doing this with other games for some time now. The rest I kind of agree with (although, uh, just because JJ3 was never finished doesn't mean that no m...
