Re: Dead in the Desert - Cactus Forest Unbeatable

Omnispeak's decompression code also handles this level fine. I'd double check your Carmack decompression code's handling of escaped tags: Cactus Forest has an $A81C value in it, which would be encoded as $00 $A8 $1C. (Or $A8 $00 $1C in big-endian.) The Commander Genius code works pretty differently ...

Re: Return to the Shadowlands

Did you find the secret level? I did, though not quite on that first playthrough: I'd worked out how to get to it, but getting that Bounder to behave took long enough that I finished the game and came back to it later. I really liked the secret level: there's something special about it looking diff...

Re: Return to the Shadowlands

Okay — I've finished my playthrough on Easy (still on version 1.0, as I couldn't be bothered copying the newer version across to my Keen Machine). Overall, I loved it — I particularly like the way it really does feel like an extension of the Shadowlands area. Little details like the Bounder village ...

Re: Return to the Shadowlands

Glad you guys are enjoying it so far! The Badoing does have shock power, put if you look carefully there is 'worm-sign' that one is present and waiting. Yeah… I noticed it eventually, but after a while I forget to look, and then end up physically jumping in shock when one gets me. :O Roobar has poi...

Re: Return to the Shadowlands

This is neat! I'm only a few levels in, but am already enjoying it a lot. Though I'm constantly afraid of a Badoing getting me. The Ruins of Sand Yego in particular lulled me into a false sense of security, so getting speared from below by what sounded like the status screen scared me out of my wits...

Re: Operation Ocflore

I finally got around to finishing this on my old childhood 486. https://davidgow.net/stuff/ocflore-end-al486.jpg That palette and the orange overscan border really gives this mod a special feel (except possibly when the sky is orange and it's difficult to see). Indeed, this has to be one of the most...

Re: Neutrino Burst Injector

I'd agree that this is the weirdest of the elevator machine levels. The two red ones always seemed to be the "cool" ones, and I'd always leave these green ones to last — usually this one to avoid that slicestar. And having only one fuse in the machine is a bit of a letdown after all the tr...

Re: Return to the Shadowlands

So, K1n9_Duk3 is absolutely right that a traditional DOS mod would probably be most compatible (at least for Keeners who already have DOSBox set up), and it's definitely possible to fit a few more sprites in with a bit of work. That being said, Omnispeak-based mods should be reasonably easy to port,...

Goodbye Galaxy Report Card

I found this digging through some files today, and don't recall it having ever been posted anywhere. I think it was one of the things unearthed when that source code backup was found a few years ago — a quick search doesn't find a copy anywhere online, despite it being billed as an "open letter...

Wow! This brings back some memories!

I really love the "curated museum" feel it has, with all the cross-referenced notes and context for everything.

Re: Keen 1 Randomiser

I've just uploaded version 1.1 of the Keen 1 Randomiser. The big change is that the spaceship parts (and the pogo stick), as well as keycards, are now spread throughout each level. This is based on the technique that KeenRush mentioned above: there are custom maps which have several joysticks (or ke...

Re: Keen 1 Randomiser

Exactly how you set up djgpp will depend on what OS you're running (and how many development tools you want to install). I'm running Linux and using djgpp as a cross-compiler. There used to be djgpp packages in the debian/ubuntu repositories, but I think they've gone now. The build-djgpp project has...

Re: In search of... Abrams Tank. Hovertank 3d port

I have a copy of this, though I confess to never having actually played it. It seems to be based on this C# port of Hovertank 3d, based on these strings in the 'abramstank.exe' executable: 1993-2014 Flat Rock Software, 2014 Andy Stewart. Hovertank3DdotNet_WinForms $C# port of Hovertank 3-D (WinForms...

Re: Keen 1 Randomiser

One improvement which might be fairly easy to do would be hard-coded random placements for keycards. Here's how I would do it (the simplest way I can think right now): For every keycard color assign a value not used by another tile (such as 650, 651 etc -- although I'm too lazy to check those speci...

Re: Keen 1 Randomiser

Glad people have found it interesting. I was largely inspired by the A Link to the Past Randomizer , which shuffles the contents of the various chests in the game. Keen is somewhat less complicated, fortunately, though I'm sure there's a lot more you could do. I've uploaded a new version (v1.0a) of ...
