Re: Are "source code mods" mods or fangames?

<r>I suppose the disagreements come from the assumption that source code mods will always leave the core engine code intact. But to me, if you can change anything about the game, why bother leaving the core engine the same? At what point does a source code mod stop "feeling" like a Keen game, and is...

Re: Are "source code mods" mods or fangames?

I can certainly see why there's a desire to treat source-based games as mods, however in my opinion one of the hallmarks of a true mod is working within a certain set of fairly restrictive limitations. The skill of a modder is in achieving excellence within these limitations. For example the graphic...

Re: The PCKF/KM Technical Problems Thread

I have the same issue from time to time on the KeenWiki. Often it turns out to be a group of archivists mirroring a whole site and if they don't rate limit their requests it can easily overload a server that is only sized for a small amount of traffic. Especially if they're not smart about it and th...

Re: KeenWiki: Are graphics-only mods valid?

Hi all, It's pretty clear that enough people are interested in skin mods that we should include them, so I'm more than happy to do this. I have always said that I don't consider myself the boss of the KeenWiki, it's a community effort, so proYorp (and everyone else) you are welcome to start other fo...

Re: KeenWiki on a new server

Sorry all, Grandy02 sent me an e-mail to let me know of the database error. I'm not sure why that happened, but when I did the last MediaWiki upgrade a couple of weeks ago, the way some permissions worked was changed, and the sign-up page was no longer blocked. Normally it's blocked to force people ...

Re: Commander Keen MIDI conversions?

So I had another look and was finally able to find the old home page on the Internet Archive: bpmusic.com . The old list of songs is there too. Amazingly they seem to have archived the actual MIDI files as well! On that page, there is a sub page for Little Known Facts (this is the last version, afte...

Re: Commander Keen MIDI conversions?

Well nothing wrong with discussing it, the fact is we don't know either way at the moment! I presume you've read some of his blog posts, e.g. this one on drums and this one about MIDI ? It would seem that yes he wrote them for Adlib at least in the early cases and that he has since lost all the orig...

You're welcome! And thanks to K1n9_Duk3 for helping me with the compression algorithm that allowed the graphics to be changed!

Re: Commander Keen MIDI conversions?

Are you sure Bobby Prince's versions are remakes? I always thought the MIDIs he had on his website (where these ones came from) were the original source ones before they were chopped down to fit into the game. I believe the original tracks were MIDI and converted to IMF using Voyetra Sequencer Plus ...

Re: KeenWiki on a new server

Haha thanks, it's supposed to mimic what could sometimes happen under DOS when a program crashed. It would occasionally write random data into the memory used for what was shown on the screen so you'd get random characters of random colours all over the screen and some of them would blink. You knew ...

Thanks for confirming! I forgot about the custom error page, I've set that up again now too. The source code for it is on GitHub.

Monster Bash was always a pain to edit. I'm making some progress on my Camoto rewrite and when I get to adding Monster Bash I hope to do things a little differently this time around to make editing the levels much easier. I only know of one mod for Monster Bash (listed on the ModdingWiki Monster Bas...

Re: Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure II: HUMANIZED!!! (W.I.P.)

Actually fading out the music is probably the easiest of all. There's one OPL register per channel that sets the volume, nine channels in all, so to change it you just do a quick formula on it every time you write a value to that register. 0x00 is loudest, 0x3F is silent. It gets only slightly more ...

Re: KeenWiki on a new server

Thanks for your kind words! I hadn't touched the voting system but it would've been upgraded to the latest version so that's good to know it works now. I think the latest version of MediaWiki removes page counts because they aren't very accurate. Most sites run caching servers in front of the web se...

Re: Commander Keen Collection (floppy disks, mail orders etc)

From the disk images floating around, it looks like they split up the CGA and EGA versions across multiple disks. It looks like there's a 5.25" 360 kB version across three disks and a 3.5" 720 kB version across two. They have filenames like CK6-1C.EXE, CK6-2V.EXE and CK6-4.EXE on them. If ...
