Re: Getting Keen 4-6 and Dreams mods running on real DOS PCs
I actually am running Keen 4 on an old 386 Tandy 2500 SX/33 my family had for years. I’m noticing I’m only getting 343 KB of standard memory. It runs, but I notice lately I’ve had more lagging at times. I can get up to 380 ish if I turn on EMM386 in config.sys, but it seems like this only creates m...

Re: Bio Menace's 30th Anniversary
I did it everyone! I finally beat every level of Biomenace! I did use the CAT cheat on the last and second to last levels of episode 3. It was just getting too tedious to keep trying to get through them otherwise trying to kill bullet sponge enemies with the wimpy stock gun, and these enemies will a...

Re: Bio Menace's 30th Anniversary
Running in dos fixed the stuttering. I'm several levels into EP 3 now. I don't think the level design is as fun as the other two episodes. There are lots of boxy maze like levels that all feel the same. The levels Mutants Attack and Robots Attack just seem gimmicky, throwing a ridiculous amount of e...

Re: Bio Menace's 30th Anniversary
I'm finally progressing in this game and playing it seriously (on easy mode, i can't imagine what this game would be like on hard!). I'm all through EP 1 and 2 and only have 3 left to go. I'm playing it in a windows 98 dos shell and I noticed the scrolling slightly stutters occasionally in a way tha...

Re: MILDLY NEAT -- For all your random Keenery needs!
Probably something we'll known but I just bumped into it last night. There is a vorticon in Biomenace in the mutant lab level that shows you some wip mutant creations of the bad guy.

Re: Commander Keen VI "The Humble Guys" release?
There was also a wiki entry for the humble guys. It mentioned a few of the notable members died of heart disease in the 00s and 10s. Sounded like quite an operation for the time. This kind of hidden history of early 90s piracy is fun to learn about.

"by Apogee Software"
I wonder what these guys like Slavelord, Lord Zombie, PieMan, etc. are doing in 2024. Must be in their 50s or 60s by now.

Re: Commander Keen VI "The Humble Guys" release?
Over on this topic, https://pckf.com/viewtopic.php?t=17901 there is some discussion about a hundreds of gb archive from a 90s pirate BBS. Cracked versions of Keen 6 are in there, however looking at the file descriptions, it might be from a group called Fairlight, and maybe another crack is from a gr...

Re: Vertigo build released (Arjan Brussee's demo that became Jazz Jackrabbit)
Nice find! So it turns out Jazz 1 wasn't copying Sonic, but rather Turrican? I wonder if the jazz/sonic direction came from Tim Sweeney. I heard that he bought Allen Pilgrim (Xargon creator) a Sega Genesis with Sonic and told him to play it to consider what makes a fun and popular game. He also was...

Re: Commander Keen VI "The Humble Guys" release?
If you haven't yet, download the windows program "badcopy" and see if it can retrieve the files from the disk you have. I had great luck using it and a USB floppy drive on a modern pc to get files off ancient disks that otherwise didn't display anything in Windows explorer and otherwise se...

There are now spreadsheets that identify the content of the archive without you needing to open every zip and guess. https://archive.org/download/ibm-lists-details There are a few things I've seen in the lists that might be something interesting. There is not every time a classic game appears in the...
