Re: A couple of technical questions about the Keen games

As always, there are multiple different approaches to display graphics in a game and make it more or less flicker-free. The solution varies from game to game, and different graphics modes (CGA, EGA, VGA) all require slightly different solutions. The most basic solution is to use "double buffering". ...

I'm also starting a programming contest. [...] If you manage to make a game using the Lua scripting language that looks like in the screenshot and plays like space invaders, you'll win This won't be much of a contest. I noticed that ever since I started compiling KEENGINE with the final official ve...

Re: Problem mounting nessie in keen3

I’m not sure whether I’m doing something very wrong, or whether I found a problem in Commander Genius. After waiting for the Nessie monster in Keen 3 I have trouble mounting it. Incan walk next to it and I tried even various keys but it always ends up leaving without Keen. I guess this is a bug in ...

Re: Bazooka Wowbagger

Is that VGA? Is it possible? :eek I don't think I've ever seen VGA graphics in a Keen mod before. I don't think it's real VGA. Looks a lot like Commander Genius with true color tile graphics replacing the original EGA graphics. Also, Keen Vorticons doesn't have a score box, except in Commander Geni...

Re: Keen Awards 2019: Winners

Ooooh... I won a Keen award for "Best Tool". I totally wasn't expecting that, especially given the competition. :crazy Seriously though, my thanks go out to everyone who voted for me. Especially in the "Keenest Person of the Year" category. also shout-outs to K1n9_Duk3 . You did some real crazy thin...

Re: BioMenace 1 Gold Edition (+ Ultimate Commander Keen 4 update)

- when you beat Dr. Mangle, you get 20,000 points instead of 34,464 (actually fixed the bug) Just FYI, killing Dr. Mangle was most likely supposed to give the player 100,000 points. But since the bonus points are stored in a 16 bit variable at that point, only the 16 least significant bits of that ...

Re: Operation Ocflore

It also includes the patches that K1n9_Duk3 has posted in this thread. Yes, but they're in the wrong place and therefore not applied by CKPATCH. You should have added them before the memory checking code. There's a "%end" command before my memory checking code, which means CKPATCH will stop parsing...

Re: Operation Ocflore

These patches should fix most of the issues related to enemies turning around on or near a slope (assuming the hitbox for sprite 193 is also fixed): #generic WalkReact (used by Arachnut, Inchworm and Mimrock) %patch $B55C $83 $7C $0E $01 # cmp [si+xdir], 1 $75 $06 # jnz l1 $83 $7C $3C $00 # cmp [si+...

Re: Keen Awards 2019

NY00123's video was uploaded two months before that thread was started, so I'd say he should get the credit. After all, he created the "Chocolate Keen" port of Keen 1-3, so he might have been aware of the jump height being related to CPU speed long before I stumbled across it.

Re: Operation Ocflore

And there's still a problem with the hitbox of the Snorkel (slug replacement) that can cause it to get stuck after pooping while facing right. It's sprite0193 in uGrab. And there's another bug in the Keen4 code that also causes issues. Enemies only turn around when the middle of the hitbox is no lon...

[...] Or do you think it should be done otherwise? No. I think voting with a dedicated poll is the way to go. I hope that this will make it easier for people to participate, since they can just vote with a few clicks instead of having to type a message. Okay then, I would like to nominate the follo...

Re: Keen Awards 2019

Anyone else? Just nominate what you enjoyed in 2019. What was special that year? You can also nominate your own works (at least no one said something against it in the past). It started quite well, don't let this die, please. :begging Do these nominations automatically count as our votes or is this...

Re: Starting out with CKSRCMOD: some issues

I'm not sure if Turbo C++ will work. I've been using an installer package called "Borland C++ For Wolf3D" (or something like that) ever since I started messing around with the Wolf3D source code in the early 2000's. I remember that it was packaged with a Windows-based installer, probably created by ...

Re: Operation Ocflore

I've come up with another patch that might be useful if you're trying to run this mod on a real DOS PC but the game complains that there is not enough memory for the background music on some levels. Just insert this into the patch file: ############################## # Load Audio Chunks Directly # #...
