Re: Level editor programming
Once you have the level format, the hard part is the GUI and some advanced features like automagic adjacency and undo. I use C++ with the cross-platform Qt toolkit for my Levelderp editor, which made things pretty simple, though some of it has become a bit spaghettified and in need of a rewrite. You...

Re: Keen 4 minimod
So I just got around to actually trying this a year later and it's amazing. Still not ready to play it through yet but it's definitely one for when I can actually isolate myself from IRL and projects for enough time to engage in some proper Keening again.

I have half an idea but not sure I can be bothered. Got the project set up in case I'm inspired to finish it in the next week.

Changed my mind. It'll be an Isis II mod.

Re: The Ice Factory is about 20 years old!
I've decided to reboot OrbKeen as a Krodacia mod.

Re: Similar game to Commander Keen HELP!
Was it DOS or some other platform? It sounds a bit like Metal Slug, but I don't think there was DOS version and the graphics were a much more advanced style than Keen and Duke. There was a lot of that kind of stuff on SEGA consoles but I don't recall any similar two-player DOS games around that era.

Re: Levellass, Are you OK?
Well if returning meant demands to produce patches under similar pressure to IRL trouble she's probably encountering at the moment, I can't blame her for taking an extended absence. It has probably become an all or nothing situation in which it is impossible for her to be present here without a sens...

Re: Spleenish Keen Fan Art
The trouble is concentrating on one idea long enough to get it into a usable form. Animating the vector designs has crossed my mind and is vaguely planned for the future as well as possible ways of making them interactive, but I'm more cautious these days about starting new projects due to the amoun...

Jimage Art
In the same spirit as my other Keen fan art post , these are some of the non-Keen related (but often partly inspired by Keen or other DOS games) artwork that I create under my regular pseudonym, Jimage. Starting with the most recent, this is Vaporville, a vector design that I entered in the newschoo...

Re: Commander Keen Confronts the Commandeered Planet
Awesome. Loving the minimalist yet diverse visual themes and well distributed scenery. Some of these concepts are getting me thinking about different ways of approaching OrbKeen elements that have been bugging me for years The levels are extremely well structured so far with just the right level of ...

Re: Keen on RetroPie
I'll add that it's nice to have a full computer in the palm of your hand. For the sake of running DOS games or certain emulators, perhaps it's redundant if you already have another common handheld console. These devices are much more versatile than that and in this case the parts can be quite easily...

Spleenish Keen Fan Art
Since it's been a long time since I have been particularly active on PCKF (though I do lurk regularly and spend a lot of time on Discord and still chip away at my mods gradually), I figure I might post about some things I've been doing instead. In particular I've been working on a lot of visual art ...

Re: Keen 6 is freaking expensive now!
One of my moderately ranked regrets was not grabbing the copy from the local electronics store 15 years ago. It sat on the shelf for the better part of a decade until they finally threw it out. Though it wasn't shrinkwrapped so it wouldn't have been as valuable. Not that I would actually sell it if ...

Re: Is Keen boring now?
But, these days I also feel like I want something more substantial out of Keen games, like maybe a deeper story, more fully realized worlds, or more fleshed out mechanics. It sounds like you're talking about more of a TV series than a game. This is one thing that deters me from many newer games: th...

Re: Is Keen boring now?
By the way, are you describing something that you understood when learning modding or was it an earlier disillusioning, disappointing realization from childhood? (This world is made of squares! >: It's finite and stored electronically! :x) I don't think I saw the tilesets until I first started modd...
