Re: The Incredible Machine (TIM) 1992 music format

Very true, you'd have to do it on an original Yamaha chip. Luckily the clones are pretty easy to spot. Although if they are true clones (as in, the plans for the Yamaha chips were stolen) they should sound exactly the same...

Re: Space Chase

It does tell you a lot about the experience of the programmers. Word Rescue also uses EGA PCX files for its graphics. It suggests that the programmers weren't very experienced, so instead of learning about graphics formats and video memory, they took the quick option and used a code library written ...

Re: The Incredible Machine (TIM) 1992 music format

The AdPlug emulator is only an approximation, and until recently it was far from perfect, so for a long time playing IMF files sounded different to the way they do on a real PC. AdPlug uses the same emulator as DOSBox, and both of them by default play the songs back imperfectly. For an example, play...

Re: The Incredible Machine (TIM) 1992 music format

Just bear in mind that good quality recordings already exist on the VGMPF: Keen 4 Keen 5 Keen 6 . The only way you could do better than this would be to record the files on actual OPL hardware with a Digisnap or similar, as those ones look like they were recorded with the Nuked OPL emulated synth.

Re: Commander Keen: Standard Galactic Numbers (SGN)?

Have a look at the KeenWiki, specifically this bit:
There is also no capitalization, and numbers are also absent. For this reason, numbers are normally spelled out in words.

What's that quote? After you finish the first 90% of a project, you have to finish the other 90%.

That's what happens when you don't use a real programming language... *ducks*

Seriously though, two extractors and nothing on the ModdingWiki?? C'mon now :garg

Re: The Incredible Machine (TIM) 1992 music format

Of course you should have credit, because you were the one who actually took the time to do it - nobody else did :) The DRO captures you made probably would have been slightly better quality - when converting to IMF, because of the fixed tempo, the delays have to be approximated. DRO2IMF just rounds...

Already extracted all midis. can upload.
Did your conversions come out at the correct tempo? I used XMI2MID as well but I have to play the MIDI files at half speed to match the tempo they are played at in the game.

Re: Space Chase

I had a look at the 'about' menu item, and the address looked really familiar - 10406 Holbrook Drive, Potomac - I was sure I'd seen it before in some Epic games. Turns out the company apparently developed some games for Epic and were later bought out by them. Interesting bit of trivia!

Re: Welcome to the migrated PCKF!

I am working towards HTTPS on shikadi.net but it will be a little while away unfortunately (slowly moving everything onto AWS and hope to get HTTPS going there.) The only solution I can think of is a locally hosted proxy script that downloads the avatar and returns it to the browser. Then the forum ...

Re: The Incredible Machine (TIM) 1992 music format

Unfortunately this isn't a playback feature, the songs have to be recorded and then the recordings uploaded, which takes up a fair bit of disk space. The VGMPF can do it because they're on an unlimited-storage hosting plan, but alas the KeenWiki isn't. (It used to be but I found the performance too ...

Re: Trouble running Keen 9 Battle Of The Brains

If you're running DOS 6.22, I presume you've tried MEMMAKER already? It will help load as many things as possible into UMBs to free up conventional memory. You should be able to get over 600kB free without too much struggle.
