Re: Planet Cloudius IX
So I happened to upgrade to Wine 4.0 for an unrelated purpose and gave this another try. Now it runs properly. Very nice engine overall. The camera and physics are surprisingly comfortable. Sound effects and music create a sufficiently Keenish atmosphere. Level design is interesting and flows well. ...

Re: Planet Cloudius IX
Graphics look excellent, particularly the foreground stuff. I'm getting an EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION error under both WINE and Windows 7 VM. log.txt (same thing for both): KEENGINE: Planet Cloudius IX - KEENGINE Version 0.62.3 ====================================================== Date: 19 Apr 2019...

Re: Unknown
Ah, yes. The familiar loading screen of the Commodore 64 cassette version of Keen Dreams. It would always hang right there after 5 minutes and had to be loaded again from the start several times. It had a great soundtrack, pity it had to be cut from the PC version.

It's kinda fun for a while building up a massive fishing fleet and forestry industry until someone wipes out my villagers because military units are boring.

Re: Pics of Keen on old systems
Current PC's are the antithesis of the very reason I enjoy retro systems. I anticipate only nostalgia factor associated with them in the future... kind of like Windows XP machines today. Agreed. Though it makes me shudder to imagine it, there will be a generation coming of age in 10-15 years who gr...

Re: Pics of Keen on old systems
80s PCs might seem unremarkable to today's audiences but if I buy a collection of them now then open museum in 2040 or something it will surely be a hit... You could probably do that with current PCs people are throwing away, given how suddenly 2000s era PCs have polluted the retro/vintage scene ov...

Re: Keen IRC Channel
Huh, that was unexpected. Even though there are only a few who still use it, rebooting the channel on another server would be useful. I do plan to re-IRC someday but at the moment Discord is the most convenient for me.

Re: Is 1UP even a valuable item?
With all that being said, to revert back to the topic of the thread, I am one (possibly one of the only ones!) who very rarely if ever uses in-level saving, has to beat the game on all skill levels, has to complete all available levels, grab every point, 1UP in every level, etc. Completionist gamep...

Re: Is 1UP even a valuable item?
You're conflating save scumming, cheats and infinite lives. They are all separate concepts. You can still play levels legitimately with infinite lives, and it makes a big difference to Vorticons gameplay which only has world map saving. Nothing about infinite lives prevents the speedruns and playthr...

Re: Is 1UP even a valuable item?
It's something that bothered me for a long time, along with what K1n9_Duk3 mentions about the impact of multiple extra lives on the scoring system. This is why all my mods now feature unlimited lives and per-level scores that you only keep when you complete the level.

Re: How should the next Keen game be handled?
Hard to say regarding Skyrim. It's too heavy on boring RPG stuff to consider the open world aspect on its own. Maybe something like what Uru was intended to be but with creatures and other hazards to consider. I'd still expect the levels to be compartmentalised. Maybe lots of smaller sections and ra...

Re: How should the next Keen game be handled?
Some thoughts from the Discord server: I was thinking about that thing someone posted a while ago in the new Keen concept thread about an open world reimagining. Maybe that is the kind of remake that's needed... Some kind of casual drop-in/drop-out game world might be the sort of thing that holds my...
