Re: Keen 5 Least Favorite Level?
This one's hard — Keen 5's levels are pretty consistently good, and at worst are either a bit boring, or a bit annoying. In fact, I think there's at least something interesting in all of the levels. I picked Defense Tunnel Burrh , Regulation Control Centre , and Defense Tunnel Sorra . Partly because...

Omnispeak v1.1
It's still technically the 15th somewhere in the world, so as a 30th birthday celebration for Goodbye Galaxy, here's Omnispeak v1.1 ! :birthday Omnispeak v1.1 is basically just the accumulation of bugfixes and new features that have been worked on in the last ~4 years since Omnispeak v1.0, nicely bu...

Re: Keen 1 Randomiser [v1.1 now out!]
Awesome — thanks for putting the wiki article together. Alas, getting the randomiser to work with anything but the most trivial mods is likely to be difficult, and involve changing the source code and recompiling. In particular, the tile numbers are all hardcoded (some of them are here , others are ...

Re: Keen 4 Least Favorite Level?
The Shikadi Master basically picks a random spot near Keen. It then has a few checks to make sure the place it's selected is suitable. If we look at the CK5_MasterTele() function in Omnispeak (which is called T_MasterTPort() in the original game and K1n9_Duk3's reconstruction), you can see what happ...

Re: First Keen mod you played
I think it must have been Yorphius II. Though it might've been XkyKeen1, too: I recall downloading both of them at the same time. The Norp the Yorp ones were also really impressive.

Re: Warp zone in Well of Wishes
So, I tried this out under Omnispeak, and the same thing happens there. Basically, this is indeed just wrapping: The reason this happens in Well of Wishes, but no other level is that Well of Wishes uses the "world map camera", not the "normal in-level camera". The function which ...

Re: Planets with rushing text in intro sequences
Keens 4, 5, and 6 all have this "Star Wars" scroller. It usually plays after the first level's demo. So, on Keen 4, if you leave the title screen for long enough, first the Border Village demo will play, then the Star Wars story text. (You can quit out of the demo with escape and then use ...

Re: Keen 4 Least Favorite Level?
I'm putting Chasm of Chills , Hillville , and Isle of Fire down, though — like everyone — it's hard to want to badmouth levels I've known for so long. (And, to their credit, I don't think any of those levels are terrible , just a bit boring.) Chasm of Chills , for all the reasons everyone's said: th...

Re: Museum obtains rare demo of id Software’s Super Mario Bros. 3 PC port
Awesome! The museum sent me a list of the filenames, and it's a bit interesting to look at this as a mid-point between Dangerous Dave in Copyright Infringement and Keen. It looks — from the filenames — to be closer to DDiCI: it's still using the EGAPICS format, rather than the EGAHEAD/EGALATCH/EGASP...

Re: Recreated Keen 4-6 Source Code
This is extremely awesome! I was just able to get Keen 5 to build on the computer I first played it on, which is thoroughly neat! It only took about 10 minutes to get everything working, too: the only minor issue was that I had to boot without any TSRs loaded to get K5_SPEC.C to compile, otherwise B...

Re: Apogee returns and is doing remasters(!)
Surprise: Secret Agent HD is now out . I've only had a chance to quickly look at it, but it seems to be pretty similar to Crystal Caves HD, but with a more adlib-by soundtrack. And it has a newly coloured/shaded version of our favourite teddy bear, which is neat: https://davidgow.net/stuff/secretage...

Re: Dead in the Desert - Cactus Forest Unbeatable
Omnispeak's decompression code also handles this level fine. I'd double check your Carmack decompression code's handling of escaped tags: Cactus Forest has an $A81C value in it, which would be encoded as $00 $A8 $1C. (Or $A8 $00 $1C in big-endian.) The Commander Genius code works pretty differently ...

Re: Return to the Shadowlands
Did you find the secret level? I did, though not quite on that first playthrough: I'd worked out how to get to it, but getting that Bounder to behave took long enough that I finished the game and came back to it later. I really liked the secret level: there's something special about it looking diff...

Re: Return to the Shadowlands
Okay — I've finished my playthrough on Easy (still on version 1.0, as I couldn't be bothered copying the newer version across to my Keen Machine). Overall, I loved it — I particularly like the way it really does feel like an extension of the Shadowlands area. Little details like the Bounder village ...

Re: Return to the Shadowlands
Glad you guys are enjoying it so far! The Badoing does have shock power, put if you look carefully there is 'worm-sign' that one is present and waiting. Yeah… I noticed it eventually, but after a while I forget to look, and then end up physically jumping in shock when one gets me. :O Roobar has poi...
