Anyone up for a CK4 competition

It goes like this:

You complete all the 16 levels on easy/medium/hard and count the times you die. The one with the least deaths, wins.
You can easily cheat 99 lifes in the beginning and even more if you like, because it really doesn't matter how many lifes you have, but it matters how many lifes you lose during the 16 levels.

Yes, it's very easy to cheat. You can just post you've only lost 1 life. But as far as I've seen, this community is pretty close and you all know each other. We're not little kids anymore, so if you decide to enter this competition, play fair.

If more than 5 people show interest in this competition, I'd like to join too. Assuming we find more than 5 people, we have to decide whether it'll be played on easy/medium/hard.

Easy would be a piece of cake. I wouldn't be surprised if you could complete all the 16 levels without dieing at all. At least, I've done that ;)

I don't know about medium. In my whole life I think I only played once or twice on medium. I usually go easy or hard, but after all I think it's the best choice for a competition.

Hard will be, as the word itself suggests, be very difficult. Especially the Well of Wishes and the Isle of Fire are a real pain in the ass on hard when you can't save ingame. Let alone the Pyramid of the Forbidden who I've never completed on hard without ingame saving. About this last level we need to decide whether we play it or not.

Hope you guys like it.

Rules
-You have an unlimited amount of lifes. You count the times you die. The one with the least deaths wins the tournament.
-Ingame saving is not allowed.
-You play every level in CK4, except for Pyramid of the Forbidden.
-You can either use a patch that gives you 100 lifes (if there's one), or you use the endless life/ammo cheat. If you choose for the last option, you do this right from the start, play the Bean-with-Bacon Rocket and shoot all the bullets in the air until have 5 bullets again. You can get yourself the endless life/ammo cheat by pressing A+2+Enter at the same time and after that you press F10 and I at the same time.
-It goes with saying that other cheats are not allowed under any circumstances.
-Although not encouraged you can practice the levels as much as you want right now. Once you decide for yourself you start the tournament, you don't practice the levels anymore in between. You don't have to play all the 16 levels in one day of course, but practicing the levels in between is just lame.
-As there hasn't been reached consensus about the difficulty we're going to play on, there'll be a tournament on medium and hard. First you play on medium (as a good warmup) and when you've completed all the 16 levels, you do the same on hard.

I'm in. I'd prefer normal difficulty but hard would be finde for me, too.
I'd like to leave out The Pyramid of the Forbidden. Even on nomarl it's just pain. :-)

Yeah, I can do it with one life on easy, but not with the others. Not sure if I've ever tried this sort of challenge on normal or hard difficulty. I'm so used to in-game saving I don't know how I'll manage... :p I guess I could try on hard, too.

I'm in. Trying to finish Keen 5 on hard without dying was a pain in a butt, but K4 should be easier (despite I'll still play on hard). Pyramid of the Forbidden will be a tough one, though...

Oh, and I take it that saves are not allowed?

Normal sounds great. Hard would be impossible to get past the ilse of fire or pyramid of forbidden without getting a game over!

So we're not allowed to load saved games unless it's directly after we left and came back, right? Or is this meant to be a big run in one sitting? :vikeen

I might be in.
Someone should set up a patch that gives the players 100 lives at the beginning, and doesn't allow extra lives in the game...
Or, how about, the game starts at zero lives, and counts up every time you die? That'd be a cool patch, and would be perfect for this contest.

You mean something like THIS:

Code: Select all

#Lives Keen starts off with: (100)
%patch $5CC9 $64 $00
I'd accept on the normal difficulty.
What you really need, not what you think you ought to want.

I'm in, but why not do it on both normal and hard? Post your # of deaths for each.

I assume no saving except in the level map. All levels must be completed in discreet runs. Yes, that will suck for Well of Wishes and maybe some other hard levels I'm not remembering.

I also assume that points don't count. That will simplify things as we don't have to get to all those dangerous and candy-filled areas of each level.

Question: do we do the Pyramid of the Forbidden? [Edit]. Ah, the OP has said "all 16 levels," and since there are 17 counting the secret level, I assume we leave that one out.

One more thing, is there a time limit? If not, I think it would be rather easy. But if we have to do it all in one sitting, we will find ourselves worn and rushing at the end. So right now I will say, no time limit.

Alright, we can either play normal or normal & hard.

Pyramid of the Forbidden will be left out. People will die about 50-60 times on that level, so if you complete all the other levels with losing only a few lifes, you get a very strange picture of someone's skill.

Points don't matter much if you ask me.

You can use the CTRL J (or something?) for 99 lives, so why should you make a patch for it? The only thing is you get 99 bullets too, but I hardly ever run out of bullets on hard.

The bullets are exactly the problem imo. They distort the skill on hard quite a bit, because a lot of dangerous situations really aren't dangerous if you shoot the hell out of your enemies.
Maybe I should get in, too, my Galaxy skills are so bad, and a thing like this could get me some needed exercise for the upcoming level-building for Keen9.

IF the bullets are a problem, you can shoot out all your additional ones.

I may try entering this competition, but I don't have the nerves to start the harder levels from the beginning many times.

I was thinking that bullets might be a problem on hard, because you don't wanna go to all those hard-to-reach places (which usually have ammo) and risk dying. But there's plenty of ammo in Border Village and Perilous Pit.

Also, I went to the BwB level, shot once, exited, then returned. Free ammo! Does the BwB count as a level we must complete? :crazy

I'll certainly participate. I think posting our results for any difficulty level(s) we choose to do would be best. That way each of us can play on whichever difficulty we're comfortable with.

The players that signed up to the competetion have been added to the list. I was not sure about Genius314, tulip and wiivn so if you three could post here or PM me if you want to participate, we can get started.

These are the rules so far. Feel free to add suggestions.

---

To make this tournament more interesting and useful, I suggest everyone posts a list of all the levels and the times you died on that particular level. After that you do the math and count how many lifes you've lost in total.
In this way, we can decide which level is being considered the hardest level on medium and hard. In my opinion it's the Well of Wishes and the Isle of Fire, but the Pyramids are pretty hard too.
Once the tournament is finished I'll count all the deaths in one level together and calculate the average number of deaths.

To save you some time, I posted the level list here so you just have to copy it and fill in the times you die per level.

Border Village
Slug Village
The Perilous Pit
Cave of the Descendents
Chasm of Chills
Crystalus
Hillville
Sand Yego
Miragia
Lifewater Oasis '
Pyramid of the Moons
Pyramid of Shadows
Pyramid of the Gnosticene Ancients
Isle of Tar
Isle of Fire
Well of Wishes
---------------------
Total:

So in the end you have 2 lists.

As been said before, we're not little kids anymore so I hope everyone will play this competition in a fair way.

As far as I'm concerned, we can start the tournament tomorrow. If you haven't signed up yet, you can still participate of course. I'll keep up everyone's lists in the first post so you can either post it here when you completed a few levels or send me the results by PM.

If anyone disagrees with these rules, let me know. I tried to honor everyone's wishes and I hope you all enjoy the tournament.

Good luck!
