Since about 2007.

Actually, more like since about 1991. I don't think Apogee/3D Realms ever stopped selling it - they stopped selling hard copies at some point, but you could still buy the games through their webstore. I bought a Commander Keen 1-5 CD-rom from Apogee/3DR as recent as 2006.

Apogee did stop selling the CGA version in November 1997 according to the Apogee faq.

  • The Title

  • Keen 1 ingame!

  • Keen 1 ingame again!

Have they forgotten their roots so much that they forget which game is which?
This always happens. I got Command & Conquer Retalation and it has images of Tiberian Dawn even though it is set in the red alert universe. So no surprises here.

I was actually talking about Keen 5 being freeware, like Keen 1 or Keen 6.

You haven't got the freeware version?

It's not freeware...

The publishing right has been lost to a dead company so no one can really sell it anymore. So technically it counts more as "abandonware" than "freeware."

Needless to say I have my copy.
I still say ID Software should say "screw it" and sell it anyway since there is no one to sue them about it.

Oh... I think she meant the demo is free. The full game is still in legal limbo :crazy

Indeed. Point being you can easily get yourself *a* copy of Keen 4or Keen 6 for things like screenshots and such. Whereas Keen 5 is a bit harder to grasp.

You can buy it on Steam, buy a boxed vbersion on eBay, pirate it from practically anywhere or, since they're id, just look in their archive!

6 isn't on Steam because of the whole legal limbo thing, though. Not even the demo, I think?

True, but website designers aren't going to buy a game just to put images up. For the bulk of people, Keen is just too much effort.

ID Software should sue the dead company who currently owns the rights to sell Commander Keen 6 for the rights back.

When no one shows up at the court hearing, the judge will rull in favor of ID Software and, boom, they can sell Commander Keen 6 again.

You know, because that's totally their highest priority. :old
