Anyone up for doing a community weird demo themed levelpack?

Here, you can get help with anything or just chat about the original Commander Keen games.

Anyone up for doing a community weird demo themed levelpack?

Post by Stealthy71088 »

The idea would be as follows
Some people record 5 min long demos of keen running around, jumping, shooting, w/e. They then submit these demos.

Level designers then have to try to make levels that allow demo keen to successfully navigate that level, with the demo finishing at the exit itself, plus minus a few seconds. Feel free to make the level as complex as you like, with as many death traps as you like, so long as demo keen is able to find some way through it. :) This includes adding bonus areas that demo keen doesn't access, if you like....

End Result: We get a levelpack made by the community for a galaxy game with some of the most random and crazy levels known to man.

If you wanted, you could even say- run well of wishes, or some other level as a demo, and try to use that demo in for the level design.

Needless to say, actually making swimming levels for this is considered cheating, because its way too easy.

Anyone up for it?

If you like, make a demo for me, send me the file, and I'll try to do it to see if its too difficult. I really don't think it will be.... 5 mins tops on that demo though.

@Stealthy: This idea is awesome, I must say... but honestly, I wish you would have waited a couple days until the Kwanzaa level pack was over before making this thread.

I like the idea! I saw a Doom map designed for the exact same purpose once, and it's certainly bizarre. Not sure I'd have time to submit anything but I still think it'd be cool. :)

THis sounds cool!
Combine Garg and Apples in a bowl, simmer over medium heat for several years. Season with a pinch of regret.

That's okay. No one else is paying any attention to it. :p

I've done this before, with Keen 4.

It was for my Zoltan mod, before I realized you could import demos into the game, it wasn't actually that tricky, you build in a stepwise manner, say first making a slope and platform for Keen to walk over and fall down, then, seeing he changes direction a x, have him fall until then, then put a passage in, if he jumps put a hazard there, if done right it can look like real elite Keening, especially since you can add enemies and they behave the same *every time*
What you really need, not what you think you ought to want.

That's what I was going for. :) How do you import demos? I did some searching, and I think you do it somehow with modkeen???

Modkeen or Keengraph will do it. First you record the demo using the demo cheat, then place it in your graphics folder and import the graphics.

This sounds like a fascinating idea but way too hard/time-consuming for me. I think I'll just wait and see what interesting things come out of it. :lazy
