platforms breaking apart

Post by rongerber »

Dear Keen Commanders,
I am an video artist from Germany and would love to use some Commander Keen gameplay scenes in one of my new videos.

When I played Commander Keen as a kid, I hated these platforms, that break apart after you jumped on them once. Or these bridges that dumped into the abyss when you ran over them. I remember those items vividly. They must have occured in Commander Keen, too.

I would be glad if you could name some levels in which such things happen. I'm really bothered that I might have to play all the episodes again, in order to find this places in the game.

Please help me.

Thanks in advance,
Ron

Bridges that break as you walk over them? I don't believe Keen had those... Though there were platforms that dropped down a fair bit (in Keen 4-6), sometimes into tar or fire.

I don't make gameplay vids, but I'm sure other people got plenty to share. :)

The Isle of Tar in Keen 4 is probably your best bet.

did they have such modern things when they made keen? well some blocks appear to be "blocks" while still can't stand on them, keen 1 level 15

yes, isle of tar has platforms, but they don't break they go down.

keen 5 and 6 has flipping platforms, you fall when they flip.

Unless, of course, you looked up while standing on it. Then Keen would never fall off those platforms.

For the platforms that break apart I suggest that you look in Miragia.
If you are looking for a bridge that disappears when you walk over it and plunges you into an abyss, I suggest you take a look at the Isle of Tar. The bridge in the middle of the map goes into an abyss. :P

Hah, forgot about Miragia.

That bridge is kind of a grey area though. The closest game I can think of that has the effect rongerber is talking about is Monster Bash.

Edit: Oh, and I totally meant that pun.

I seem to remember a 1-3 level that had a fake exit within reach, but the pathway to the exit is fake and you drop down into this huge maze.

I wonder whether the level design was to break the rules for the sake of breaking them, or if the level was just half-baked. I tend to think that it must be the latter.
