I suppose you could host Keen 6 if you want to, it's not like any of the parties involved in its production would know about it. Although it would be illegal, punishment is unlikely.

It's not like ID Software sues people who host their games, like Lucas Arts, so I would not worry about it.

offering a free download seems morally acceptable, because it means you are not making any money, ID is not selling the game, and other people on ebay are not making money either. please point it out if i'm wrong... which i probably am.

You're right, but it's still not legal, as law =/= sense or right.
