What you really need, not what you think you ought to want.
Alrighty. Today, last year I released The Eight Accumulators. Today last year I began work on Suburb Shenanigans. So today is the (hopefully only) annual Suburbs update, which doubles as the Christmas update, as I won't be here for Christmas.
Heaps of work has been done on the project since I first announced it.
Tiles are almost all there, enemies are getting there patches are coming together and graphics are being completed.
Most of the original issues that arosed have been fixed and the only pain left is 'screen tearing', which happens differently depending on the computer used to run the game due to massive amounts of graphics used in each level.
_mr_m_ has done an outstanding job with the tunes, and has recently had an extended break due to school. TheHackerCat (also in the music department) has done a great job on the one and only song that they have produced (so far, not sure what the story is here).
Lass has supplied me with many little and not so little patches along the way and I'm very greatful for that!
I was hoping to have a demo video ready by this date, but after handing up my school notebook, I'm left with a slow internet-less windows 2000 PC running XP. Although I still managed to get a pile of screenshots together for the update.
New and improved version Keen's bedroom:
Hope you're keen and hang in there!

Well well, it is astonishing to see how can an existing game be modified to look very different! The same could be said in regards in the earlier shots from March, but now there is even more to see, obviously. I think it's mainly about the feeling of an actual neighborhood on earth not often seen in the Keen realm.
The reason? Well, DOSBox will try to output about 70 different frames per second (like an actual (S)VGA card used to run Keen4 with no modifications), while your display's refresh rate is probably no more than 60Hz.
I have a feeling it is problematic to solve this while not potentially lowering performance due to waits for VSync (thinking of cycles=max). Maybe a multi-threading approach could be applied (so while waiting for VSync the DOS machine emulation itself can keep doing something), but there are very great chances it is simply not going to happen.
If it is the issue I'm thinking of, usually solved in modern games by toggling "Vertical Sync" on, then I'd say it's a current limitation of DOSBox. You can force it if you choose output=opengl or output=openglnb in DOSBox and force VSync for DOSBox externally (by the GPU drivers). However, some things like the Keen 4 title screen pixelation effect are probably going to be slower than expected.Bubbatom wrote:the only pain left is 'screen tearing', which happens differently depending on the computer used to run the game due to massive amounts of graphics used in each level.

Oh my Glob. Everything looks astonishing! But what's Johnny doing, hiding under the table? It would be cool to see him play with Tex on the yard through the window.
It's so beautiful. All the little details transfer me back to the 90s, man.
