Reasonably easily. The problem is that eventually the level will fill with Berkettes.
Maybe a limit then, if there are already n berkettes, then no fireballs become berkettes, but otherwise there is a chance that the fireball will spawn a berkette.

That's much harder to do. Where I have infinite enemies I make them destroy each other if x are too close. This *can* cause the game to crash if you're a twit and using cheats, but usually the enemies crowd and keep their own numbers down.

how about a simple counter keeping track of how many berkettes have spawned. If the counter is more than n, fireballs don't spawn berkettes. if the berkette is killable, then when a berkette dies that counter is decreased so that another will spawn.

That would probably work quite well, though be a bit involved.

that's pretty amazing. fire makes points, more fire is ammo, lifewater is death.

maybe wood can be another source of points?
perhaps keen candy can just disappear on touch, since you burn it up without being able to collect it or something.

Hah! That's very cool! Can you make flammable those pick up items that don't kill you?

If I understand my Tile Info correctly, there can be tons of point items.
Our little Berkette here cares nothing for Candy and Soda. But I suppose they should disappear in a puff of smoke without yielding any points.
Let's not forget our newest little friend -- the guy who really like candy the best:

Funny thing about the Berkette. Should it really be taking flames or igniting them? I figure that since its so little, its trying to collect flames from anywhere it can to get bigger.

Is that a treasure eater as the Keen replacement sprite?

what if we had some kind of warioware-like game mod, where every level is a different character, and they each had different rules?

treasure eater: dies when all candy is gone
berklette: dies when touches lifewater
sprite: ???
bluebird: needs to collect all eggs or something

Quite honestly, I've never played Warioware. But diversity between an enlarged cast of characters would be....awesome, I guess.
Let's not count out one of the most lethal characters of them all:

If anything, these might be implemented in NetKeen :).

One little problem and possible spoiler for those who didn't watch the youtube video: The eyes need to vanish while standing still.

Your work with replacing Keen with the different enemies is really quite good. I wonder what you'll do next...maybe a Bloog in Keen 4 ... in one of the biggest crosover/mashup/clusterfucl mods of all time: Aliens Ate the Council Janitor!
