I'm starting off with a sort of werewolf/alien hybrid, but want to hopefully whittle him down to something you described, Plasma Captain.
Capn, my state machine for Yorps and Gargs are much like you describe. I have an Idle, Left and Right for Yorps, with a chance to jump while moving, super basic. Gargs are the same with no jumping, and will charge when Keen enters his 'attack zone'.
His head looks too much like a dog's one and overall he looks too brutal with that body, especially when you compare it to this.
Thanks for the comments, guys. I'm toning the down musculature as we speak, and I'll see what I can do about the head. I think I'm too attached to it, haha, but it needs to look like a Vorticon, not a dog/
These are the sorts of Vorticons you'd expect to find wearing tartan flannelette shirts and living in log cabins in forests. The Vorticons Keen met were clearly the slimmer, less rugged metropolitan kind.

Still much to be done, but I scrapped the old dog head. Going to try and keep it more cartoony, like the garg and yorp. Looking at it now, I need to slim down his midsection more and make the sleeves less skin-tight. But anyway, progress!
3D models are employed to give a degree of perspective to the platformer. If you actually play (I assume you haven't given your question) one of the demos linked in this thread you will notice you see different parts of static objects depending how far and what direction you are away from them. Same goes for non-static, it's just harder to notice.
