So far the level map looks cartoon-ish which is consistent with the atmosphere of the original keen series, but as was already mentioned, the amount of--for lack of a better word--dithering of the in-level desert backdrop, including the clouds, contrasts too much. My suggestion, if you're dead set on making more realistic in-level backdrops, is to modify the level map as well.
My goal hasn't nescessarily been to make things look more 'real', but in order to accomplish the perspective of great distance I think a different style is required. Keen's 4 and 6 generally use patterns of organized shading rather than random pixels; using the random pattern, to me any way, gives a perspective of greater distance than a specific one.
What about the world map looks cartoonish?

Cartoonish... animated... there's actually a difference? As long as the world map, along with the rest of the game looks Keenish, that is all I care about, as far as graphics are concerned.Ceilick wrote:My goal hasn't nescessarily been to make things look more 'real', but in order to accomplish the perspective of great distance I think a different style is required. What I'm referring to is too much depth. Remember the clouds in Keen 4 and 6? Yes they were flat, as were the dunes in Lifewater Oasis and Miragia, but that's what kept the lighthearted cartoonish feel in the game. The whispy clouds, the rocks, and sand dunes are about as realistic as you can get with an un-paletted 16 color set. The level map, on the other hand, AND the cactus image from Iv4n, don't have the same visual depth. I realize it's a work in progress; and the above view perspective of the level map makes realism more difficult; I'm just commenting on the disparity between the two views--level map vs. in-level graphics.

So you're Commander Keen's dad? Guess that means he let the cat out of the bag for his parentsBilly Blaze wrote:Billy Blaze isn't my real name; My real name is: William Joseph Blazkowicz II lol
What's your son up to these days? He must be, what, 26 years old now? Did he ever really save the universe or not?

Actually, Ceilick's original intention was to call it Keen 9: Battle of the Brains. Whether his vision for his TUIT trilogy has changed or not, only he knows. I am assuming he was going to have Keen and Mortimer battle face to face in his Keen 5 mod, but by the time he finishes his Keen 6 mod Dead in the Desert, he might change his mind and decide to end his trilogy in another way. Only time will tell.Billy Blaze wrote:I love the name! When do you plan to release Keen 8: Dead in the Desert?
P.S. Are you still planing on making Keen 9: "Episode Unknown"

I don't really know when it'll be done anymore. I haven't had time to work on it in the past few months, I've been dealing with some...personal issues.
The last in my trilogy was called "Battle of the Brains", but I really didn't like the name so its "unknown" because I don't have a new name for it.

wouldn't be a TUIT mod without thisI am assuming he was going to have Keen and Mortimer battle face to face in his Keen 5 mod
