When Boobus Tuber was just a spud

Post by troublesomekeen »

First of all, thank you guys so so much about commenting on my Keen Cast Banner. I feel like a big potato now, but I'm still just a spud--like Boobus Tuber. What's that? Never heard the story of the renowned Boobus Tuber? He wasn't always so oversized. Nor was he capturing dreaming kids and putting them in chains. I'm talking about a REALLY long time ago, "when Boobus Tuber was just a spud." Let me try to explain what I'm getting at.

The first time I booted up NetKeen, my mind was blown through the back of my skull and spattered itself across the wall behind me. Lord knows how I'm still alive today. I was just so thrilled at the sight of the Janitor, Council Page, and Spot all playable characters. Only recently have I played an actual round of NetKeen, with lemm, Ceilick and fantomx. For those of you that have been following my "Guardian of Wisdom" thread, you know that my primary focus is on centering mods around characters other than Commander Keen. "The Guardian of Wisdom" was my first crack at it. It tells a story of what happened when Lt. Barker arrived on Gnosticus IV to ask for volunteers to help him in his quest to find Commander Keen, who was teleported clear across the galaxy by the evil Mortimer McMire. Volunteering was none other than Princess Lindsey. And as something of an escort, the janitor tagged along. And Spot.
Barker and his crew eventually did find Commander Keen on the planet Calidune. After stopping Mortimer once and for all, Commander Keen returned to Gnosticus IV to return his friends, Princess Lindsey and the janitor back to their homeworld. And then the Oracle blew up, due to some mishandlement of the batteries.
My little story is something of a prequel to The Eight Accumulators. It tells of how disaster strikes again on Gnosticus IV as soon as the princess and the janitor leave with Barker. It all began when the High Council received a strange message from the Oracle...

Over the past 5 months or so, I've been working on taking various characters, reshaping and resizing them to fit in the dimensions of the Keen sprites. In my "Guardian of Wisdom" thread, you'll see some progress on such characters as the Berkeloid, Smirky, Sprite, Mimrock, Wormouth, Robo Red, Blue Bird, and the Blooglet. I've also started on the Meep, (which can be seen in my banner). (Also in the banner is the Tank Robot by Dr.Colossus.)

There is one lost episode I overlooked in my modding efforts. That would be the redoubtable Keen Dreams. You see, it was quite the task shrinking Robo Red down to the size of Commander Keen. But it worked out exceedingly well. Just lucky, I guess. There is one character who stands towering over Robo Red itself. You guessed it: King Boobus Tuber. Keen Dreams has a colorful cast of characters, dash them all. If you saw one of the vegetables in NetKeen, which would you be most likely to see? It wouldn't be the Broccolash. He doesn't shoot any projectiles, and that would make him...not so effective in a round of NetKeen. Perhaps Frenchy. But then I thought of the Tater Trooper. He does, after all, have a bayonet. King Tuber does not. Oh wait, yes he does:

Image

That is, without a doubt, King Tuber on the cover. But compare him there with him here: http://www.shikadi.net/keenwiki/King_Boobus_Tuber

But if we resized King Tuber to Keen-size, and give him that bayonet, he could be in NetKeen! Without further ado, here is the little sneak peek:

Image

How do you like him? Does he look like a proper spud?
This, of course, opens the possibility of centering a Galaxy Mod around King Boobus Tuber. Now, I've done a lot of writing. Thank you for reading it all. Now it's your turn. What are your thoughts on this all? Have you any ideas about any kind of back-story, front or side-story on the King of Spuds? Watch out, folks. King Tuber has a shotgun with armor-piercing rounds, and eyes in the back of his head.
This has been TroublesomeKeen.

No, but your shrink rampage gave me some ideas. What would be if instead shrinking, we enlarge some smaller enemies?

King Tuber looks cool, but if he is small (like 8 year old), he shouldn't be a king yet (unless he is shrinked).

Lol. Neat sprite, I like the addition of the rifle with bayonet. I did my own version of resized/playable Boobus Tuber way back when I was doing the original Netkeen sprites: Image

I guess it would be cool to add altered kinds of enemies to a mod or fangame, e.g. baby gargs or bigger mutated ones :)

Interesting... TK's sprite is based on the title screen, while Ceilick decided to base his on the actual boss sprite; regardless, great work to both of you!

I love these ideas as well as the door it opens up for new mods.
I can't wait to see them reach fruition.

Well, Shmyaramult, I thought it was. But then when I took another look at the title screen... Here, see for yourself: http://youtu.be/Cwwgj839f8U
Next is the jumping, shooting and standing sprites.

I approve of whatever adventure he finds himself in as an excuse for us to play a tuber mod 8)

Well... Do you guys have any suggestions about what this mod would/could/should be about? Story plays a huge part in mods. It can be the deciding factor on what the rest of the cast, characters and creatures will be. I need an excuse the make a Tuber mod.
So what will it be? "The Spud Who Would Be King"?
"I've Got My Eyes on You"
"The Fries Are French Toast!"
"The Pale of Two Potatoes"
"Beauty is in the Eyes of the Potato"
"Taters Gonna Tot"
"#Brown"
"Hash & Rehash 2"
"Monster Mashed"

Hahaha... What say ye, Keeners? Have any ideas? What's Tuber's objective? What's he after? Is he being oppressed? Is he kidnapping dreaming children? Is this his beginning of the reign of terror? Was there a mix up between the Fruit and Vegetables? "King Tuber's Trip to the Supermarket"? Is the produce section having a food fight? We've got a lot with!

Monster Mashed is probably the best one there.

i think the spud sprite is a little small compared to the other character sprites.

then i thought "wouldn't it be funny if you rampaged around netkeen as a GIANT boobus tuber"?
it would be like Saxton Hale mode from TF2!

He's mad because his cousin was turned into french fries for a kid's meal. Now he rampages around and wants to kidnap all kids to keep them from eating them.

You got it all wrong! This is what the sprite should look like:

Hey guys. Back from a Rush concert in Anaheim! Thought I'd get back to a little spriting here and there. So, take a look!

Next is Looking and Shooting Up and Down sprites and Death sprites.

Unfortunately, yes. My Tuber is much smaller than than the rest of the characters. Even with the crown, Tuber stands 30 pixels tall, Keen at 32. It's a big difference.

Shot seems a little high for the gun. You may want to lower it.
