Long before finding out about how to get to the Pyramid of the Forbidden, I used to think that you had to beat the game in every difficulty level to get there. Then, I discovered Princess Lindsey above the Chasm of Chills and started looking for a secret passage in the Pyramid of Moons. For a long time I believed that the way to get to the secret level was that door on a tiny plataform in the chamber where the level exit is.
The perilous pit didn't look like a pit for me either.
And the berkeloid is a special one. I still can't really accept that those white things are pupil-less eyes. I always thought that it was his mouth and that his eyes were those small reddish brown spots above the white circle.

One of my Keen misconceptions was actually about the English language... I learned the word 'chasm' from Keen4, but i thought it was pronounced 'tschasm' and not 'kasm'. I just assumed it alliterated with 'chills' but... it doesn't!

There was a game Chasm: The Rift. Never played that game, but I'm also pronouncing it wrong. And I'll continue to pronounce it "tschasm" because kasm sounds stupid

ʃɪkədi here in the US
(though I usually pronounce it as ʃə'kædi instead)

I was a -dee until I was told it's wrong and -die was the only way to go.

People keep saying that the Berkeloid's eyes have no pupils. I always thought that the dark spot between them was where the two pupils were - that the pupils were just comically close together, because it's cartoonish. Even having examined the sprites many times before, I never noticed that... Until now... Yeah, they might just be blank...
Also, I too fell for the old "The Perilous Pit is a giant dome mudhouse" misconception. I just passively accepted it until I realized that it didn't make a whole lot of sense and really took a good look at the image.
At a glance, it just looks like the light is shining on the left side of the "dome", and that the right side is darker. But the light is really shining from the right side, illuminating the left side of the pit... Also, those vertical lines and the smooth outline around the pit don't help much. Maybe if the edges were a little more rugged it would break the illusion.
