Looking for old versions of CKPATCH sources

Post by NY00123 »

UPDATE 2 (Apr 17 2017): Guess what, while I suspect that v0.5.0 may be lost for good, original binary and source archives of v0.5.1 have been found! They're in the following (mostly complete) backup of Admiral Bob's files, done by Malvineous (mhead.zip hasn't been found so far): http://archive.shikadi.net/sites/member ... bob/files/

UPDATE (Apr 16 2017): Looks like Greg Yauney's release of v0.11.0 has been found (including sources)! Thanks to old IRC logs for this. Versions 0.5.0 and 0.5.1 remain missing, although I don't expect anything regarding these. Link to the 2010 release of v0.11.0: http://files.commanderkeen.org/users/mi ... 0.11.0.zip

Hey there,

I'm currently looking for a few old versions of CKPATCH for some weird reason (let's say it's sort-of an archive of CKPATCH versions). I'm referring here to binaries and sources altogether. (I suspect that I can locate old EXE files in a few old mods.)

Good chances are that none of these old versions is really around, but let's try anyway.

The versions I'm interested in are:

- Version 0.5.0 - First beta release - 2/12/2001 (probably not really around, since v0.5.1 was released just 4 days later)
- Version 0.5.1 - Second beta release - 6/12/2001
- Version 0.11.0 (without support for Bio Menace, other additional games or Keen 6 v1.5) - Fifth beta release, by Greg Yauney - 21/12/2010

Note that the above v0.11.0 release shall *not* be confused with this custom build adding Keen 6 v1.5 support, by Andrew Anderson (14/04/2009): https://pckf.rigeltechnical.com/viewtopic.php?t=597

It shall also *not* be confused with this release which adds support for more games (like Bio Menace): https://keenmodding.org/viewtopic.php?p=16843#p16843

For reference, I do have these versions, including sources:

- Version 0.9.0 - Third beta release - 26/6/2003 (currently found in http://files.keenmodding.org/)
- ckpatch-0.9.0-ext - Adding support for a few more games (like Bio Menace) - 25/06/2007 (https://keenmodding.org/viewtopic.php?t=975)
- Version 0.10.0 Fourth beta release, by Andrew Durdin - 23/11/2007 (currently found in http://files.keenmodding.org/)
- Version 0.11.0 Fifth beta release, by Andrew Anderson - 21/12/2010 (not to be confused with Greg Yauney's release; https://pckf.rigeltechnical.com/viewtopic.php?t=597)
- ckpatch-0.9.0-ext2 - Minor improvements to Bio Menace support - 11/03/2011 (https://keenmodding.org/viewtopic.php?p=16741#p16741)

- Modification of version 0.11.0 with the changes from ckpatch-0.9.0-ext2 -15/04/2011 (https://keenmodding.org/viewtopic.php?p=16843#p16843)

More unofficial extensions (the version numbers are my choices here):
- Version 0.11.1 - Sixth beta release - 24/10/2013 (https://keenmodding.org/viewtopic.php?p=18970#p18970)
- Version 0.11.2 - Seventh beta release - 09/04/2016 (https://keenmodding.org/viewtopic.php?p=20128#p20128)
- Version 0.11.3 - Eighth beta release - 26/03/2017 (https://keenmodding.org/viewtopic.php?p=21358#p21358)

Here's a summary of my guessed graph of releases:

Code: Select all

                                   /-> 0.11.0 (2009)
0.5.0 -> 0.5.1 -> 0.9.0 +-> 0.10.0 +-> 0.11.0 (2010)                -+> 0.11.0 extended -> 0.11.1 (Unofficial) -> 0.11.2 (Unofficial) -> 0.11.3 (Unofficial)
                        \-> ckpatch-0.9.0-ext -> ckpatch-0.9.0-ext2 -/
Thanks for anything that may (or may not) pop up,
NY

Heh, thanks been fast. Yeah, it is in the list, but thanks for checking anyway.

To have a better feeling if a version is already in the list or not, the release (or build) date can be checked in addition to the version number.

Hey, thanks for checking these anyway!

- CKPatch v0.9.0 beta from the abandoned level pack indeed has the exact same EXE - I compared to the one from ckpatch090.zip. Weirdly enough, though, there are minor edits to CKPATCH.TXT (Xtraverse -> xtraverse, http://www.commanderkeen.net/xtra/ -> http://spatang.com, site is down in both cases though).

- Is your copy of the v0.11.0 beta the "vanilla" one, without support for games like Bio Menace (and does it include sources)?

- I'm wondering about the v0.10.0 beta, too, although I suspect the difference are quite small, if there's any real difference in behaviors.

Update: I *think* that I've found Greg Yauney's release of CKPatch v0.11.0 from 2010. Good that I still have old IRC logs (I haven't found this with Google).

Link: http://files.commanderkeen.org/users/mi ... 0.11.0.zip

There's even a direct post about the above release, although this required googling for the URL after splitting the ZIP file out of it (and I first had to go through the topic "Mr.Black's Keen4 Level project"): https://pckf.rigeltechnical.com/viewtop ... 061#p39061

I stand corrected, since it does include support for Bio Menace. However, the last updates to BM*PATCH.PAS in this version are from June 2007.

The only changes in the modified v0.11.0 (compared to the above) are these:
- CKXPATCH.INC: The function call "Writeln('Error: Unrecognised version of ',ExecutableFileName);" got replaced with "Writeln('fff ',ExecutableImageLength);"; No idea why this happened.
- BM*PATCH.PAS: Support shareware v1.1, and further accept LZEXE-packed forms for all supported Bio Menace EXEs.

And so, at this point, only versions 0.5.0 and 0.5.1 might still be missing (and unfortunately I don't expect much, if any, for these).

Thanks again for the earlier assistance so far!

Another update: OK, I think that I got (in a way) a bit of bad news, as well as good news.

First, I searched for old Keen 1-6 modifications, with an emphasis on old bundled versions of CK*PATCH. I did find the EXEs from v0.5.1 for Keen 1-3, and surprisingly also for all of 4-6 (saying "surprisingly" since Keen 4-6 modding wasn't really common back then).

Again I have a feeling that v0.5.0 is lost for good, for the following reasons:
1. It was prepared just 4 days before v0.5.1 (according to the change log).
2. It didn't support version 1.31 of Keen 1-3.
3. As mentioned above, it wasn't really that common to mod Keen 4-6 back then.

The better news, though, are that original binary and sources archives of CKPATCH v0.5.1 have been found!

It turns out Malvineous had made a (seemingly mostly complete) backup of Admiral Bob's files, including the above CKPATCH archives (mhead.zip hasn't been found so far): http://archive.shikadi.net/sites/member ... bob/files/

All right, let me try and re-ask: Does anybody have some archive (binary and/or sources) of CKPatch v0.5.0 from Dec 2nd, 1001 (not 0.5.1, which I've found)?

Reason I'm asking is, it turns out there was indeed such a release, but original ZIP files seem to be gone for good:
http://web.archive.org/web/200210110522 ... bob/files/
https://forums.3drealms.com/vb/showthread.php?t=2529

I also can't seem to find a quite old PCKF post (from the older ezboard forums, 2002), which is linked from the above 3DR topic. It probably wouldn't assist, but still mentioning.

Hey,

I think that I can finally show what I've done with these archives, beginning from version 0.5.1.
I basically uploaded the sources to a Mercurial repository on BitBucket, represented by separate commits.

Current link to repository: https://bitbucket.org/NY00123/ckpatch
K:M post with some more details: https://keenmodding.org/viewtopic.php?p=21637#p21637

Note that original archives (e.g., ZIP files) are currently not available at the above repo. I mistakenly remembered that, while BitBucket does not have GitHub's "Releases" feature, it still (supposedly) has a way to store binary uploads somewhere. (Looks like the archives available for download from the repo. are automatically generated from the various commits, or at least the tagged ones.)

I've considered adding one more revision with a few minor updates, but then decided it probably won't help a lot anyway. I've also wanted to be done with preparing this repository for a reveal. Not sure I'll repeat such work soon (especially with the differing modification dates), heh.
