Space Chase

Post by DoomJedi »

I've found this game on my 1995 shareware collection CD - it uses the same Apogee/ID engine other early ID games used (Duke Nukem, Keen 1-3, Bio Menace...)...do you know it?

Did anyone try to mod/patch this one?

I know it. It was mediocre at best (it's a complete garbage) and probably that's why there are no mods for it. And is probably better known as Jason.

Did anyone try to rip graphics/musics junk from it?

If anyone has the files Keengraph could probably make an attempt at it. Does it use the EGAGRAPH format?

In case anybody is looking for a download.

I don't think the game actually uses the same engine as any of the games mentioned by DoomJedi. It doesn't do any smooth scrolling (camera moves in multiples of 8 or 16 pixels), which is basically the same behavior as in Duke Nukem 1, but that's probably just because this is the easiest way to do scrolling of any kind in EGA mode.

This is the version I have (has different demo levels that what I've seen in some downloads)
https://www.mediafire.com/file/7x5998bd ... /SPACE.rar

Donnow, it look very similar - physics, look, sounds, characters...so I thought it's related.
Still I wish we could rip the art and music.

I just opened STORM1.SSP in a text editor and saw some file names in there. There are PCX files, which should be pretty easy to track down, if (like me) you know the structure of the PCX file format. I also saw a couple of XMI files, which is a MIDI-like format I've seen before (you can play it in WinAmp, for example) and that could probably be ripped from the archive without having to figure out the structure of the STORM1.SSP file itself. I'll take a closer look at the file format when/if I have time for it.

Well, this was easier than I expected. Here's a quick hack of a program that will extract the contents of STORM1.SSP: Download (with source code)
(tested with version 4.00 a.k.a. JASON.ZIP a.k.a. the same version that DoomJedi has)

Looks like my initial analysys of your video was incorrect. The file STORM.SSZ (inside STORM1.SSP) stores the PC speaker sound effects in the same format as used by Keen 1-3 and Duke Nukem 1. :o

I just opened a few files and thought to myself 'This will be easier than expected... best check if nobody else is doing this first...' and good thing too; it'd be too tempting to write something otherwise.

Have these formats been added to the moddingwiki?

I had a look at the 'about' menu item, and the address looked really familiar - 10406 Holbrook Drive, Potomac - I was sure I'd seen it before in some Epic games. Turns out the company apparently developed some games for Epic and were later bought out by them. Interesting bit of trivia!

Wow, thanks :) Extraction works, so cool. Nice backgrounds, really.
And now music can be converted to midis.

Here is one xmi to midi converter that works (tested with winamp)
https://www.mediafire.com/file/wskftftb ... i2midi.zip

usage (dosbox)
xmi2mid <xmi.file.xmi> <midi file.mid>

Already extracted all midis. can upload.
Can convert pcx to other format and upload too.

I'm not getting anything with STORM2.SSP and STORM3.SSP. They're the same format... does this program not generalize?

Also what moron coded this? The gameplay is fine I suppose but the graphics are packed in the most obtuse, space-hogging way imaginable.
