thanks for the feedback. sure I'll add a version number on the main screen for the next upload.
could you video record this issue, please? maybe it helps me tracking down this issue more easily. BTW, is this very section the only area where this issue occurs?

thanks to your video I was able to track down the glitching bug which had something to do with tile info updates.
if you could, please test this updated version. Even though I've tested everything myself, two heads are still better than one.
Download v.1.7b

...ah, and as requested the title-screen now indicates the current version.

Cool, need to check that on CG maybe without Keen5 assets this time...

Hey, I just tried this out (v1.7b). Excellent graphics and thoughtful level design adaptation!

But I thought levellass made some patches earlier in the thread to make the Yorps act more like the original ones? To make them do those little half-hops as they move, and make it so that Keen has to jump more exactly onto their head to stun them. Is there still a plan to implement those? If so, I might wait until it has been before I play through the entire mod (oddly, I actually miss the half-hops more than the exact head jumps... it gives the Yorps so much more character).

Also, I miss the original sounds of the Yorps statues.

I also kinda wish that the music in the first level had a melody, but ah well (I think one of the distinguishing features of original Keen music is that they all have hummable melodies).

Hello. I'm rally sorry for just dropping by and asking like a noob, but I really wanted to play the game and I don't know how to run it.
First: is it DOS or Windows? Why isn't it explicitly said anywhere? At least I haven't seen it.
I have the game from here. I assumed that it's DOS. It has two files which could be DOS executables, play.bat and ck5patch.exe, so I opened D-Fend Reloaded and created a profile. However, the game closes immediately when using either file.
If I try to run the files directly, it says that they are incompatible with 64-bit Windows. I use the 64-bit version of Windows 7.

See, I always wanted to play "Commander Keen". It's very funny (I just love the phrase "ion propulsion unit (with carpet height adjustment" :lol)... but it's so UGLY that I soon gave up. I love oldschool graphics - but in moderation! (I'm generally much more into adventures than platformers, and the fact that I'm double-left-handed and can hardly complete any platformer without cheating surely plays a role.) I enjoy the kind of EGA graphics seen in later parts of "Commander Keen", in "Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure", and of course in adventure and RPG-adventure games such as "Quest for Glory" and generally all SCI-EGA Sierra On-Line games, "Loom", the EGA version of "Monkey Island 1", "The Crimson Diamond"... (I prefer VGA, but higher-res EGA is great too... and I'm an open 3D hater. ;)) But the original "Commander Keen" has such horribly poor, empty sceneries... :( So the remake could be a great alternative - I already like what I have seen. But I'm unable to run it... :(

Welcome to the PCKF!

Since this is a modification of a Commander Keen game, and the Commander Keen games are DOS programs, this also must be run under DOS. Most people play in the DOSBox emulator. First, though, make sure to copy in KEEN5E.EXE from a copy of Keen 5, which is not free software and is therefore not usually distributed with mods. You can then launch DOSBox, mount the directory where you extracted the game, switch to the mounted drive, and run play.bat:

Code: Select all

mount C C:\path\to\MOMGalaxy
C:
play
(Other emulators might work too, but in DOSBox you should be able to see any errors that prevent the game from starting, which is helpful for troubleshooting.)

The version of this mod that I downloaded seems to have an extra "MOMGalaxy" subfolder inside the main folder. You can ignore the subfolder; it appears to just have remnants of the environment used to develop the mod.

So does it mean that I need to add the executable from CK5 to CK1 folder and use it as the file to run the game?
I use D-Fend Reloaded, not "raw" DOSBox, so I don't need to type commands (and I usually, at first, type "/" instead of "\").

You need to add the Keen 5 executable (KEEN5E.EXE) into this mod's folder, yes. But running that original Keen 5 executable will not apply all the necessary modifications, so you need to run play.bat to run the game. The technical details are that this batch file invokes the patching tool CKPatch, which loads the Keen 5 executable into memory, applies the mod's changes ("patches") as directed by a .pat file, and runs the game.

The game closes again when I run it through play.bat. :( It looks like this:
The game foldr contains files: audio.ck5, audiocdt.ck5, audiohed.ck5, editmaps.ck5, egagraph.ck5, egahead.ck5, gamemaps.ck5, keen5.tli, maphead.ck5, pat.pat, the executables: play.bat and ck5patch.exe, and the now added: keen5e.exe. Do I need to add any extra files? To run the patch first? I don't remember well how to use "raw" DOSBox. When I select it as the file to run within CK1's profile in D-Fend Reloaded, the game crashes too.

Hmm, that should be all the files you need. (I just downloaded the newest version of the mod and it seems the extraneous subfolder has been removed, so you're not missing anything.) Running play.bat should do the job of making sure all patches are applied.

The amount of options for raw DOSBox can be a bit intimidating, but fortunately we can leave those aside for now. When you open DOSBox (newest version 0.74 recommended), you will be at a command prompt. You can type each command in my earliest post there, pressing Enter after each to run it. Once you run "play", CKPatch will be invoked to apply the patches and start the game:

For the first command, make sure to use the path to where you extracted the mod. The others are verbatim.

If the game cannot start, please post any error messages shown. Either text or screenshot is fine. :)

Other DOSBox tips: To toggle fullscreen mode, press Alt+Enter. To quit, use the X or run "exit" at the prompt.

I managed to run it, but I have two more problems.
1. The screenshot capture shortcut in D-Fend reloaded is Ctrl-F5. However, Control is an action key in the game. Also in the menu it results in starting the game. Can I prevent it from doing it, so that I have time for screenshot capture?
2. Where is the game story? :( I want the "ion propulsion unit (with carpet height adjustment" description! :lol

Hmm, I haven't used D-Fend Reloaded, but if it's a DOSBox frontend, you might be able to change the screenshot hotkey in the DOSBox keymapper (Ctrl+F1 in raw DOSBox). You could also change the Jump button's key in the game's Configuration section, though that might make playing more difficult.

At the game's menu, you can press F1 to access a help menu, including The Story. :)
