Does anybody else feel that the Emotikeens need to be COMPLETELY redone from scratch?
Now hear me out... They are based on Keen's head from the Galaxy Keen sprites, then are scaled up 2x, and then have facial expressions drawn on... So you have these huge chunky blown up pixels combined with smooth normal-res mouths and other details... Which I think look very awkward and inconsistent.
Perhaps Keeners have grown attached to these icons and wouldn't advocate such a change and consider the Keen4 sprite to be the most "Keenish", but objectively, to me, they're kind of poorly drawn, and I know there's a lot of talented artists on these forums who could probably do better. (Not better than the Keen 4 sprites of course, but certainly the EmotiKeen set)

I quite like the blockiness - it gives them a retro feel...

I was referring to the blockiness only in contrast with the new added details, such as the mouths and facial expressions. I'm all for oldschool Keen, but it just looks wrong.
I think that the Keen 4 cutscene heads are a good candidate for a new wave of EmotiKeens. I experimented with coloring them in, but in my opinion it looks a bit excessive. Nevertheless, I felt the need to share it with you guys.
The dimensions are slightly bigger than the current emotikeens, but this would allow for greater detail and more creativity.
By the way, this post is NOT about whether or not Keen should have skin color, but rather about using the Keen 4 cutscene Keen as a new template for a set of replacement EmotiKeen's.
The best part about it is that there are ALREADY 14 UNIQUE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS for this template used in the Galaxy cutscenes.
I'm already working on a full set (without skin color or shading) if anybody wants to see.

That second shaded one looks uglier than the middle one. Also, why does everyone get so hung up on the skin colour? Do you have the same issue with the Simpsons? Certainly, in the Simpsons context it's a design choice while in Keen it was a technical compromise, but in the end white skin is the only way we've know Keen in the canon games. It's as much a part of his identity as the pogo stick.
[Edit: Just noticed Paramultart's skin colour disclaimer. But my point still stands.]
Also I second DHeadshot's post. The emoticons are fine as they are. I find the balance between high and low res comfortably reflects the nature of this community, bringing continual new life into the games while retaining the original spirit.

Yep, you're right Paramultart, the emotikeens have grown on me. There are quite a few of them I don't like for example or and above all , but I like the template, for its simplicity and before mentioned retro-feel.
The main criticism I'd have on your template would be the size. They're bigger and will cut up texts more than the current ones, but on the other hand it's barely over 10px more. If people use your emoticons I'd also like the original ega-palette style most, but your 3rd example would fit as a "realism emotikeen" or a "new-school emotikeen" in the set of ega-emotikeens.

Here's an old thread discussing a similar thing. It seems a little more relevant to the discussion: viewtopic.php?t=19
Just a suggestion: maybe we mozy this convo over on to that thread. (that's not meant to sound rude btw)
I like your art Paramultart, but I'm gonna have to vote to keep the present ones. Why deny what is Keen - it's a Keen forum!
