News *play country- and channel-appropriate news theme now*

Post by kuliwil »

I mentioned news in another thread, so I though it'd be nice to set up a news thread - stories that interest people. It need not be breaking news or an all-appealing topic, so post what you want - as long as it's news. Any topic, any source (even if you reported it yourself, fellow citizen journos :P), anything!

If I may have the pleasure of starting us off:
Science news:
http://www.cosmosmagazine.com/news/3515 ... page=0%2C0 - I remember seeing on Ten weekend midday news (back when it was better than it is now - ew. ABC Midday Report FTW! :P) a story about a British man who regrew the tip of his finger, nail and all, with the aid of stem cells. Also artificial bladders and all that - but this is even bigger! But poor rat.... hope it needed the transplant :crazy leads me to another news story but I can't remember the names so I can't link ya atm

IT news:
http://msftkitchen.com/2010/06/windows- ... ealed.html - sounds good! I thought I'd not bother with 8 after 7, thinking MS had pretty much got it right, but this looks great! (if it works and really has all those features :P)

Apple suckers news (:P):
http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/apple-can ... ag=nl.e589

Odd news:
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/108009 ... ish-attack (tbh, if u look at the pics - I'm surprised that there aint more blood! or... any for that matter! Obviously that pic was taken long after)

NOT news: (cor, MSN and Nine does suck most of the time - I am of course referring to the Hilton story)

If you want news, there are plenty of sites out there. I think it's pointless. Thumbsdown.

Ouch!

What I was thinking when making the thread was:
-Not all people look at EVERY news service
-There are many different countries represented on this forum - we could have some interesting articles from a different angle
-Some people have different favourite topics, and by posting them one might catch the eye of someone who doesn't usually look in to that topic for some reason and change their view or at least inform them.

So, I raise your thumbs down and give it a thumbs up!

I still think it's pointless, but do whatever you want. Some may find it interesting, I won't messing around.

Well, I already posted about the Congo's independence day thing... :P

In terms of local news...there were wildfires in the East Bay around Mt. Diablo and apparently there's been a bit of rioting in Oakland. The wildfires are out, and so I think are the riots.

Haha, are those events related perchance? :P

Heh...probably not :crazy I don't remember what the rioting was about...probably unemployment or something like that. The wildfires happened because it's summer in California and that means there has to be wildfires somewhere. :P

The new montenegrin language is trying to emerge as another language/spin-off of serbo-croatian.

And in African news, Congo's still in a nightmare. The genocide there killed like 5 million people in the last several years. But we don't hear much about that.

Wow, none of that here. Then again, Australia didn't go in to recession (go Wayne!)... yet (keep it up, or not, Wayne!).

Are riots on unemployment common in the US? (or anywhere else for that matter everyone)

(See wiivn - the thread works! :crazy )

EDIT: Sorry Scarlet, was writing this when you posted there.

Haha, my grandfather is Serbain. If you ask me the Brits should never have made Yugloslavia :P It's like how they carved up Africa without thought of long-term political stability. Then again, other countries did it too, so I'm not just blaming the UK here. Australia aint flawless either when it comes to borders either - distant past, past or present.

I'm just thinking of what happened with Kosovo and self determination:
When asked what it means to be a Montenegrin, almost 78 percent said that it meant respecting political institutions and laws of Montenegro, "while 71.5 percent replied that it meant to be of Montenegrin descent", said reports.
hmm, hope that it holds!

And I hadn't heard about either of those! I'm surprised about the Congo one, hadn't heard a whisper! Thanks Scarlet!

I'm just thinking of what happened with Kosovo and self determination:
Meh, the british are not the ones that made yugoslavia. The serbian king was greedy for land, and got lured/suckered in to take land that was croatia and slovenia. One of the biggest failures in history, really.
But they planned to divide yugoslavia in the late 1930s. But then world war two came and the commies decided to create new arbitrary boundaries and to create new nationalities...

I'm surprised about the Congo one, hadn't heard a whisper!
I have not looked into it too much. I suppose their regime is friendly to the west, or they have nothing significant there (like rwanda).
