I guess it's meant to fight child pornography the same way the PATRIOT ACT fights terrorism, or China fights freedom of speech.
I'd seriously call a lawyer about suing for sexual harassment if I got a letter openly accusing me of supporting CHILD PORNOGRAPHY.

...good god wtf.

Just to point out, if it hasn't been already, you could set the death penalty for piracy and it would still happen (heck, you could say it did)!

By the way, there is a funny coincidence with the bill's name.

In my native language "sopa" means "beating stick".

I bet none of you wants to feel the SOPA on his back :p

Update: http://www.theatlanticwire.com/politics ... net/46310/

tldr: they voted to continue it later after having actual experts look at it, but the supporters (read: guys in entertainment industry's pockets) are pushing the bill for this Wednesday again; go figure.

I wonder if Obama understands how much of a make-or-break issue this bill could be for his presidency, since I haven't heard him comment on it.

If it got through congress, would he veto?
If he signed it, how many of us would vote for him?

If Obama vetoed this bill, I would be flabbergasted.
He has urged China and other countries not to censor their internet, so by not doing so, he would, unsurprisingly, be a huge hypocrite.
This is the guy who extended the PATRIOT ACT, remember.
I don't think he could care any less about our rights.

Major sites are contemplating going down in protest.
Many have talked about it, but few mustered up the balls to follow through. (I'm looking at you, Google and Facebook)

Wikipedia and Reddit appear to be the only sites who will actually do it.

I don't know about you guys, but on average, I use Wikipedia at least several times a day. Hopefully, this deliberate inconvenience will raise public awareness of these atrocious pieces of legislation.

A lot of people think that the scare is over, because the SOPA bill is apparently "shelved" for now, but I think it's important that we keep up the good fight to keep the internet free.

There's something called an "Edit" button, Par.

*EDIT*

Pretty much my take on the whole thing.

I think the PCKF will be more than fine, but I have a feeling Deviant Art will get taken down and hopefully 4Chan.

My 2nd post was unnecessary on my part, but the 3rd was a necessary bump. Exactly one month after my last post.

Oh man, I don't like Wikipedia going down, although I support their cause. I haven't seen anything as stupid as SOPA in a long time. What little is left of my respect to the US government will be gone if this passes.

I find that pretty appropriate. Western society seems pretty masochistic in terms of what it allows its governments to perpetrate on them...

SOPA killed the Internet star

Post by candyjack2 »

I used you on the dial-up back in ‘89
Lying awake intently browsing ‘round on you
If I was young it didn’t stop you coming through
(Oh-a-oh)

They took the credit for your free mass promotion
Rewritten by pen on some new bill
And now I understand the problems you can see

(Oh-a-oh)
I met your children
(Oh-a-oh)
What did you tell them?

SOPA killed the Internet star
SOPA killed the Internet star
Laws arrived and broke your connection
(Oh-a-a-a oh)

And now we meet in an abandoned DNS
We see the pages and it seems so long ago
And you remember the memes used to go:

(Oh-a-oh)
You were the first one
(Oh-a-oh)
You were the last one

SOPA killed the Internet star
SOPA killed the Internet star
In my mind and in my car
We can’t refresh, we’ve 404’d
(Oh-a-a-a oh)
(Oh-a-a-a oh)

SOPA killed the Internet star
SOPA killed the Internet star
In my mind and in my car
We can’t refresh, we’ve 404’d
Laws arrived and broke your connection
Put the blame on torrenting…

(You are the Internet star)
(You are the Internet star)
SOPA killed the Internet star
SOPA killed the Internet star
SOPA killed the Internet star
SOPA killed the Internet star
(You are the Internet star)
SOPA killed the Internet star
SOPA killed the Internet star
