Oh hey, congratulations! Glad the pandemic didn't totally get in the way. I've been considering hormone stuff but doctors' clinics feel unsafe at the best of times, especially now haha

Congrats to nanomekia, too!

Oof! Haven't been here in a hot minute.

...Sooooo, Microsoft XBox now owns ZeniMax. Possible revival on Keen sometime in the future, just maybe?

Soooo I've got a question that anyone may or may not be able to answer.

A friend of mine's trying to figure out what sort of program he needs to open a .eds audio file - it's from a game called Project Eden and we're suspecting it may be a proprietary format as none of us can find anything upon some not-so-cursory googling. Any ideas?

(Edit: Okay, it can apparently be opened by something called Ensoniq Disk Tools but that appears to be impossible to find any more. Still, anyone have any ideas perhaps?

Sayeth my searching, for the curious:

Code: Select all

A file with the EDS file extension is an Electronic Data Sheet file, also called a Rockwell Automation DeviceNet or ControlNet file.

This plain text format is based on the CANopen standard and is used to specify various descriptive and communication data for hardware devices, usually those within industrial automation systems.

The EditStudio video editing program uses EDS files, too, for EditStudio Project files; as does the Ensoniq SQ10 sound synthesizer, as Ensoniq SQ80 Disk Image files.

The only software we know of that should open Ensoniq SQ80 Disk Image files is called Ensoniq Disk Tools, but we can't find a valid download link.
)

File extensions don't necessarily tell you anything about the file format itself. Just look at the Keen games and their .CK1 to .CK6 extensions.

It's possible that those .EDS files use a relatively common file format and just had their extension changed. But it could also be a completely proprietary file format that was only used by this game. Your best bet would be to open the file in a hex viewer/editor and see if there are any recognizable header or footer tags in that file. (This assumes you know what certain files formats like .WAV or .ZIP look like when opened in a hex viewer/editor.)

If it's a plain text format, as claimed by the information you found, just open it with Notepad (or any other plain text editor) and see for yourself it it really is text. But if the file is several megabytes big, don't bother. It would take way too long to open that file in Notepad and it's highly unlikely that it would be a plain text file.

I happen to own Project Eden myself, but I have never actually played it (and don't have it installed right now). Maybe I can take a look at the files later and see if they resemble any file format I'm familiar with.

Hex editor was already tried - there's no header or footer that any of us could recognise in the file we're prodding at currently (I can PM you the screenshot another friend who's also working on this took, if you'd like to see if you can pick anything out.) Opening it in Notepad freezes Notepad, quite predictably, so it's likely not just plain text. I was able to get Audacity to import it as raw data but that didn't get anything but screechy noise out of it.

Everything I've found seems to sort of suggest "well this is proprietary stuff disguised as something else lolololol" so I really have no idea. I'd appreciate it if you could take a look at some point, no rush.
