Moving Servers, Upgrading phpBB

Post by Flaose »

Well, this last bulletin board crash has convinced me that it's time to move boards. I wish I were able to do it myself, but neither servers nor php is something I'm not familiar with.

Is there anyone willing to be a new host? I know Andy's ready to move on as well.

Well, near year, new forum. Is there any way we can import the data from this forum into a new one? I don't know much about php and the likes of forum software, but it would be a shame not to. That being said, maybe a change could give this place some new attention (it's felt a little stagnant off and on lately, hasn't it?).

it should be as simple as setting it up and importing the old database into the new bb, if you get the same bb software.

Mortimer's had enough of this Keen-oriented forum. He demands the successor be titled "Public Mortimer McMire Forum".

You mean public grand intellect forum (PGIF). It's not like we call this place the public Billy Blaze forum.

You make it sound as if he were holding us hostage. Nothing could be further from the truth. He has been providing a service for us for the last five years that no one else has seriously offered, long after his interest in Keen waned. I'm now asking if someone's willing to take over for him, preferably someone with history here that we can trust.

We'll be able to import the data from this board, so the transition should be fairly seamless, should it actually happen.

Hmm... I have the means to do such things as these, but I do admit my history has some questionable streaks. I would certainly like to help any way I can.

Andy has done a wonderful job of hosting. Yes, there has been downtime, but you can't complain too much about a free service which is up 345 days per year! Having said that, a move would be good and I just wish I could help!

What traffic pckf.com do generate? I'll do some research for hosting options.

I (we) can also help with annual donations if someone finds a host for a reasonable price but cannot afford it.

Huh. So far it looks like after all our cry out for updating phpbb, we cannot find a host or someone capable of doing the transfer to a newer version. :crazy

as i posted yesterday as anyone considered https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/ i think that it would a great host and plus the more traffic you use the cheaper it becomes. you need virtually peanuts to use these guys and plus perhaps the pckf also could have a paypal page in case someone wants to make a donation to cover costs and to keep the community alive?

https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/ seems decent, although I only understand about half of what the page has to say. I've never worked with this sort of thing before.

I'm keen for a PCKF logo revamp, and seeing as I just got myself a new Intuos4, I'd like to give it a shot.
