Sorry, Baby stopped posting here while you were gone. I think they got a new job or something.

It was infected with a malicious and difficult to remove virus. Windows 8 I believe it was called.

Wait... you can run windows 3.1 in Dosbox? Can it run CDs from DosBox?

DOSBox has been able to run 3.1 for at least six years now! It's a bit buggy but can be made to work quite well.

What do you mean RE: the CDs?

Actually if you do it right, you can make a win 9* image and boot that too,

My Wii has run it before...

I have a number of old windows games that won't run on new windows without some kind of stupid virtual PC. It would be good to run them off CD via windows 3.1 via DosBox, can this be done?

Yes, you can mount your disc drive in DOSBox and use it in Windows just like on a real machine, I can post the exact instructions if you'd like.

It's a lot easier than I remember, I probably should have just put it in my original post but here goes,
  1. Crack open you DOSBox config file (listed under the Start Menu as DOSBox Options)
  2. Scroll down to the autoexec section at the bottom
  3. Insert:

    Code: Select all

    mount d f:\ -t cdrom
(where f: is the drive letter of your physical disc drive)
  4. Enjoy using your CD-ROMs in Windows 3.1!

Alternatively, you could also make .ISO images of your CD-ROMs and mount them *all* in DOSBox with this command:

Code: Select all

imgmount [drive letter, d through z] [path of the ISO image] -t ISO

This is why my DOSBox.conf file looks like:

Code: Select all

imgmount Y C:\dosbox\hd1.img
imgmount D C:\dosbox\MSFA110__01.iso -t iso
imgmount E C:\dosbox\MSCR110__01.iso -t iso
imgmount F C:\dosbox\zoombini.iso -t iso
imgmount G C:\dosbox\CARMENUSA.iso -t iso
imgmount H C:\dosbox\WORLDMPC.iso -t iso
imgmount I C:\dosbox\PC_SIG12.iso -t iso
imgmount J C:\dosbox\DELUXE_PACK.iso -t iso
(hd1.img is a virtual hard disk I created mainly for testing purposes. That, and sometimes I have to set programs temporary swap directory to be on that drive...)

It's what I use to mount all my old Windows 3.1 games so I don't have to have any CDs in the drive, and I don't have to keep reading from 20+ year old discs. The only problem I've run in to is that some discs aren't properly read by my image-making software and I have to manually make an ISO by copying the contents of a disc to the hard drive and making it from there.
