Anyone remember Capital Critters? There was a show that didn't know what its audience was.

Indeed, a lot of this stuff - even some of the relatively mild things (the name of the volcano in the fishtank in Finding Nemo, anyone?) - will go over children's heads. That specific example, despite being very mild, I never caught on until someone a bit older pointed it out to me.

Nowdays, a lot of the things in these shows - even some of the more adult-focused ones (not talking the extreme cases like Drawn Together here, but more the intended-for-adults-but-probably-okay-for-kids-to-watch kind such as The Simpsons or Bob's Burgers) - I'd see these things and think "oh wow, they actually let kids watch this?" - but then I notice, my younger sister (aged 9) will watch those things, and not even realise there is a joke at those kind of points, let alone have any idea what it's referring to. This is despite the fact that, according to our parents, she pretty much "was taught to speak by a combination of Peter Griffin and Philip J Fry" - yet the only affect this seems to have is on her accent (eg. very noticable R sound in "heart", "fart", etc; whereas the standard accent here would just pronounce those with a long "a" sound and no "r" sound whatsoever), not the kind of things she does/doesn't understand or know about.

Being that I am black, I still don't feel this is an issue of race entirely. While some have their attention on this for the wrong reason, this show still does have some highly questionable things going on with it, that is the focus, the sexual fetishism in children's shows. Not the whole "white vs black" business. As said the fetish is degrading to all parties involved.

Oh, that is just fucling pathetic. Honestly, I find it quite disgusting how everyone - whether it's white guys, black women, straights, gays, cisgenders, transgenders, whatever - always have to try and find some obscure reason to claim other groups are attacking or trying to oppress them, these days. >_>

Just one reason I can't stand the social justice movement in practice, even though I agree with the core concepts in theory. Yes, of course I think everyone should be equal - but equality does not mean "blame cis-het white men for everything".

"I agree with breathing, but I don't like how those other people breathe so I won't breathe."

You actually think black women, gays, transgender people and so on are TRYING to find systematic oppression and abuse? It's something they suffer whether they try to find it or not! The unconsidered selfishness of your comment shows why they have every reason to be complain - casual dismissal of their cause.

You have used a few idiots in the majorities as an excuse to describe minorities' issues as "obscure". You are a part of the problem.

The problem isn't social justice, it's the fact that it's on the internet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=p ... IvwupbScpM

Yeah, a lot of kid shows do make adult jokes, but a guy who makes porn who also who creates a kids show is really weird.

Actually it's not.

It's really, really not.

My favorite example is 'A boy named sue' a rather amusing song whose writer wrote utter smut. Dr Seuss did some wonderful propaganda posters and the list of professional authors that write erotic fanfiction is exhausting. People are sexual being and the world has a massive sexual component. I'd be surprised to find someone making kids shows that *didn't* have some seletons in their closet. (Or in the case of Rocko's Modern Life, tapdancing on he front porch.)

Okay, you got me there. I guess it's like you read something your best friend, a serial killer, someone you know wrote, you can see their thoughts, feelings, and beliefs hidden in it.

And here you've proven my point, by deliberately misquoting me to exclude those who the social justice movement doesn't claim to "defend".

Besides, my point was never about cases of *actual* injustice. The kind of thing I'm referring to is, well, exactly what's mentioned in the article. The fact that, in this case, people have gone out of their way to suggest that something is anti-white because a black character - not the entire black race, but a specific character who just so happens to be black - is getting the good end of the stick in this case.

Perhaps this example will illustrate the difference:

Person A (male): "Hey, I really like you. Wanna go on a date?"
Person B (male): "Nah, I don't swing that way."
Person C (gender is irrelevant): "OH MY GOD YOU FREAKING HOMOPHOBE SCUM!"
^ not okay, this is exaclty the kind of situation I'm referring to

Person A (male): "Hey, I really like you. Wanna go on a date?"
Person B (male): "No way you filthy foob!"
Person C (gender is irrelevant): "OH MY GOD YOU FREAKING HOMOPHOBE SCUM!"
^ this is fine, because B actually is acting negatively towards someone for being gay

Or for another example, virutally any case where a Tumblr user claims to have found homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, etc. Doubly so when the claim relates to some special snowflake made-up gender / sexuality, or claims along the lines of being "trans-racial".

I think a good rule of thumb (although it may not apply to 100% of cases is) - if the discrimination is not immediately obvious, chances are you're going out of your way and inventing / twisting things to find it, and thus need to shut the hell up about it.

"Social Justice" to me is a bunch of pansies trying to find something to gripe about all the time when they don't know a thing about what actual social justice should be.

In fact, that's what most of the world is anymore, somebody complaining and griping about stuff that either isn't very relevant, they know nothing about or that they find "immoral" or "unethical" (when they aren't.)

On one hand, a lot of the aforementioned kinds of people have that attitude even IRL.
On the other hand, it's probably safe to say they learned it on the internet; most likely from Tumblr.

On the other hand that's pretty much what everyone has said about every movement ever. (Either that or 'They're violent and want to destroy us all so don't listen to them!') I figure that in a healthy society you need that sort of rabble rousing. It will be a dark day when such things are suppressed. (For example Russia blocks large chunks of tumblr for this reason and it's illegal in Belarus.)
