how do we turn the levels and the gameplay into more than just 90 minutes, say, of sci-fi pistol action filler?
You're assuming it needs to be turned into something else.
It does, video game movies are cursed.

This is quite simple; at heart movies like Taken and Die Hard could be broken down to 'A guy tries to catch the bad guy while shooting stuff all the time.' The Keen games are filled with useable material. Mars has shrines, you could have 5 or 10 minutes of a dark, empty, creepy rundown building that leads to the talking statue. (Animated by Pixar of course.) There's an ice castle, cities, transmission bases, a secret level, teleporters... anyone who couldn't make a movie out of that doesn't deserve to.

And the other two episodes are just as rfull of salient stuff.

I went through all Mortimer's CK Comics and couldn't find what I was referring to. The link below is to one of the frames that for a while was my profile picture on Facebook (March 2011, so it's older than that). The whole comic wasn't drawn like this, IIRC it was just this frame for dramatic effect. If someone could remind me what it was I would really appreciate it.

The last page description wrote:I wondered why this page took me so long, then I looked at the difference in quality between this one and the last one

Whoops

I guess that's why
I guess the next page is seven years worth of quality improvements.

Oh man. SnipSnap_McGee. Hullo! You found this thread. If you were to sneakily peek into the Release Forum, you'll find a thread currently called [v2.8.2] Abiathar: The superior Keen Galaxy editor. Abiathar is the level editor for the Galaxy Keen Games. If you were thinking of modding the Vorticon trilogy, Mindbelt is my weapon of choice.

There's this very nice website: http://www.shikadi.net/keenwiki/Main_Page
Look at the list of links on the left panel, there's lots of juicy things to click and investigate.

Glad to see a new member interested in modding so soon!

I heartily agree with TroublesomeKeen's recommendations. (Full disclosure: I am the author of Abiathar.) I'm sure people around here are willing to answer any questions you may have about the modding process or the tools we use. The modding forum is a great place to find information or ask such questions.

Welcome aboard.

While I'm curious to see the mod that comes out of this, Para, SnipSnap_McGee's DP is pretty obviously your work. As is SnipSnap_McGee's trolling (well, establishment of a base from which to troll) on the Attention Americans thread.

Please don't waste users' time with requests for information you already have; Fleex actually went to some effort to respond to you.

No he didn't, it was troublesome keen that put effort into his response.

Both, actually. Sorry TSK - I had the reply tab open for a while before I got around to writing and forgot to scroll back further.
