I called it 'Non-Conformist Day'. It's the one day in the 1461 day cycle that was invented simply because we can't be bothered to add less than a minute to every other day to balance out the miscalculation in the calendar.
Seriously, if we just decided to add a bit less than 57 seconds to a day everyday the need of an extra day and the concept of a leap year ceases to exist.
Happy Non-Conformist Day! Break the mold everyone!

@ll: that doodle was the highlight of my leap day. Thanks for the GIF
Would've been much easier back before we moved all essential services to digital platforms which rely on accurate and consistent time to synchronise. The Millennium Bug may have had very little impact (because it was acted on well and truly in time), but with the IoT and other networks as massive as they are, it'd be very hard to achieve now.chrissifniotis wrote:Seriously, if we just decided to add a bit less than 57 seconds to a day everyday the need of an extra day and the concept of a leap year ceases to exist.

So let me get this straight.chrissifniotis wrote:The exact number is 56.81(09589041) seconds, where the number in parentheses represents a recurring decimal series.MoffD wrote:are we talking binary fractions? less than a bit is imbossibruchrissifniotis wrote: Seriously, if we just decided to add a bit less
Math.....can you trig it?
We create a day that occurs nice and regularly every few years and nicely extends the shortest month of the year. You find this to be a terrible burden and a terrible solution.
Instead you would prefer it that everyone have to deal every day with a confusing tail-end of seconds and math gibberish to constantly reset their clocks, shattering the simplicity, symmetry and easy divisibility of the 12-60-60 order and opening up the possibility for countless digital and programming issues all in the name of conformity?

Well, the solution would have to create a revolutionary new unit of time measurements that each day's artificial length can easily divide into (srsly... it doesn't work the way you say it does. The revolutionary cycle around the sun happens to be at a rate of 365.25 days. You're suggesting we have 365 artificial days every year instead of just one every four years?)

... and adding seconds to a day would have the impact, that at some point (round about two years after doing so) day becomes night and the other way around. what a confusing situation that may cause ...

Fantastic! You got the joke. Honestly no, what's available is fine but I wanted to just figure out how it can be done cause I'm a math nutter. Kinda like Adam Spencer but not as funny.Levellass wrote:You're a middle manager aren't you? How long have you been overseeing Tech Support? Can you help me close of my ComCast account?
Nisaba also hits the nail on the head, but just to expand on the point roughly every two months or so the clock falls behind by about an hour due to the extra time; nearly six hours every year.
