Which one, ?! or!? ?
Which one, ?! or!? ?
Do you use '?!' or '!?' to denote volume with a question? I use '?!' because QUESTION! is better, logically, than EXCLAMATION?. Anyway, what do you think?!

Didn't you post a comment in one of my stupid polls saying "I once thought of making a poll asking whether people use '?!' or '!?' for their exclamations, but decided against it. Think before you post." Or maybe it was someone else. No, you're this new guy fleexy, so it was definately somebody else. But now I see you doing it! This puts me in the mood to make a really retarted poll now

"?!" makes more sense. When you see the punctuation, the main idea you get across is that it's a question, so that would come first. The exclamation point is extra, and is just there to add emphasis, so it comes second.
Although technically, I don't think either of them are grammatically correct... I think a question can be ended with just "!," if there's supposed to be emphasis on it.
EDIT: Also, the "pointlessness" of this poll reminds me of an XKCD:

I tend to use neither, but to me they feel like two separate things.
?! when the sentence is meant to be questioning and asked with passion/energy, !? when it's meant to be more of an exclaim with questioning air.
Edit: And emoticons should be, in my opinion, written in their full form. When emoticons inside parentheses are parsed, : and ) is known to form one and thus the ) doesn't mix any parentheses, anyway. And if it all is just plain text )()()((( mismatched parentheses do no harm, anyway.

?!
The question mark is an essential punctuation mark. The exclamation mark isn't really necessary, as one of my high school English teachers told me. The purpose it serves can be just as effectively made through the text itself.
But it's very useful for extra "punchiness" in comics.
"BOOM!" "WHACK!" "KAPOW!!!!!" etc.
However, I have added emphasis of explosive giganticness in my comics before, by using a fullstop instead. "BOOM." Has much more doomy finality to it than "BOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" The fullstop just gives it sinister understatement that puts chills in your spine. Maybe.
The XKCD comic guy obviously hasn't heard of "anime" (or "upright") emoticons. ^_^ n_~ ;_; O.o etc
The only drawback here is that they make you look like some kind of cosplaying weeaboo instead of a business professional.

Let's not forget this!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111!!!1one!!!11!!!!1
Or...because I can...
Or...because I can...
Code: Select all
<?php
echo "BOOM";
for($exclamation = 1; $exclamation <= 9001; $exclamation++)
{
echo "!";
}
?>
Or just...
While the exclamation mark might not be necessary, it certainly is useful, at least if used sparingly. In a way the question mark could be left out too, there is no reason we should pose any questions. "You possibly originate from some town. Please state the name of that town." (Makes more sense than asking "Where are you from?" )
Code: Select all
<?php echo "BOOM" . str_repeat("!",9001); ?>

This is the real solution to the ?! !? crisis...
BEHOLD THE INTERROBANG
‽
For example:
"What was that thing‽"
I have these interrobangs so big because otherwise, they get all crushed like this: ‽. Then you really can't tell what that thing is. :(
And for the (gsad fga. :) (awfew frwa. :)) (dgsa fasfd. :) ) (asfs fwat. (:) crisis...
(sagf saf. :]) Though, it looks like a frog.
(gsg sagf. :}) Though, it looks like a guy with a soul patch and a weird chin.
(dvs asaf. :3) Though, it looks like a fat... animal thing.
Of course, usually I don't use these solutions in my posts. Usually when faced with these problems, I do this for the first problem: ?!
And this for the second: (yad saf. :) )

*cough*
Personally I use '?!' if it's an exclamation-question. For example:
"You did WHAT?!"
But if the exclamation is stronger than the fact that it's a question I use '!?'
"Why would you DO THAT!?"
