It's pretty much a means of contacting anybody without the need for gargling phone numbers or street addresses or AIM accounts. All the stupid quizzes and games are annoying and pointless, but hey, you can look at pics of ur sexy female friends I mean, uh, spam people's walls of course

You mainly just post stuff you do or find and then have people reply to that stuff. You can post microblogs (= very small blog-like messages), pictures, links and a few other things. And then there's a whole slew of groups and application so you can supposedly have a bit of "fun" and/or show what you're a fan of. Groups are also an useful way to stay up-to-date on whatever your interests are.
So basically, it's a social networking site that can do a bit more than Twitter, but isn't as cluttered as, say, MySpace.
I use it regulary nowadays because I find that the people I know really bother to check and reply my messages. I can imagine a whole bunch of attention whores being out there on Facebook, too.

Indeed, but is his last name Gough?
I myself hate Facebook and such sites, possibly because I've never been socially outgoing, and possibly because I've had a number of friends and friends of friends who have had... unpleasant experiences on such sites. I think there should be a lot more security or at least caution on such sites, a mistake today can be on the other side of the world in an hour!

OR you could just totally ignore the whole "Comment" / "Micro Blog" thing and simply write a blog so people who know you could keep tabs on the little bits of interesting things that happens from time to time in your life...
Just an idea.
But yeah Facebook and MySpace are totally retarded.
So is that other one... what was it...

People like to think they're special and matter to others, or then they want to build their identity. These are the tools. Not using it myself...

On a related topic, I closed my Myspace 2 days after I turned 18. I got tired of being spammed by porn ads every 2 minutes...I'd delete a batch of them, and when I returned to my home screen, I had 20 new messages...
At least Facebook doesn't have that problem...and it seems most everyone at my University uses it to contact each other.

I really wish I wouldn't get an email every time someone PMs me in facebook_mr_m_ wrote:On a related topic, I closed my Myspace 2 days after I turned 18. I believe such websites are good tools. Myspace has more of a advertising edge and Facebook is a little more tightly knit, and I say that just based on their original purposes and how they deal with privacy. Both however are very effective in communicating with people and finding old friends. I've had more success telling someone about an event with Myspace than a telephone. Currently I use Facebook because most of the people I know are on there and I can communicate with them better than Myspace, plus the way the status feature is done on Facebook trumps both Twitter and Myspace.
I do not see them as retarded. They are tools and have their uses, nothing more nothing less. Just like I don't use Twitter because I feel everything done on it, is done Facebook. Not that I see Twitter as retarded, but as a tool I do not find it effective.
If you're not social or don't like the social network sites, then it's just a tool that is not as useful to you.

I think it comes down to, are you going to try to go for comments and stuff from people you don't know, or are you just going to just make a blog. All the different sites are pretty much just for that. The only reason someone might use a certain page may be that a majority of their friends or family actively use that service.
To answer Rorie's question, these sites are used for wasting time and keeping track of the people you know. Like your sister.

Facebook is a trojan horse in everyone's personal life.
The thing is, in the name of narcissism we do gladly share every bullshait thing we have done and we think everyone else think you are special and that everyone cares if you just went to the john.
Anyone can keep track on what you like, do, think, what you are.
That's totally harmless, right?
Facebook isn't that bad really, it's a nice way to keep contact with your social network. What i do not like are blogs and Twitter. Is there anything more pathetic than writing shorter textmessages that has no point or importance at all?

It's not the same; people will have to know your blog at that point and actually visit it, and then also be interested in whatever you have on there. With social networking sites like Facebook this is all within reach; you send your personal stuff pretty much directly to anyone who wants to know, and they can even bother to reply easily.Galaxieretter wrote:OR you could just totally ignore the whole "Comment" / "Micro Blog" thing and simply write a blog so people who know you could keep tabs on the little bits of interesting things that happens from time to time in your life...
Facebook isn't retarded when used intelligently, and after having used it for a while now I can definitely say it's different than other ways to communicate (like IMs or blogs).
PS. I'm not an outgoing person. I don't talk much to people, I'm socially pretty withdrawn. I mostly only have net buddies, but at least I can let them know anything interesting I found or did without having to send it to everyone and annoy them. I think Facebook is a great tool (but seriously, MySpace is utter and total crap).

DSL: I agree, the idea that everyone wants to know what you're doing all the time is pointless and redundant, and I think that also transcends into YouTube. You have tons of people posting pointless videos that get 5 views when they want views in the millions.
When that kind of random stuff first came out on the net, before even YouTube, it was an internet phenomenon (see the original Numa Numa video). Now in order to get noticed people will have to bring substance to the table.
And I think it's the same with blogs, instead of writing about things you did all day, that people will not care to read, write article-esque blogs instead. Have something actually to say. Let people know how you think, and not just what you do. Maybe people can learn from your insights or even agree with you?
Same with the status updates on Facebook or Twitter, I'm sure most people don't care about someone's constant updates. That's why at least trying to make interesting or funny status updates can be a solution.
Basically: Post something that is interesting, and not just something to be random. Have substance.
And again, those are all examples of what people do with such tools and not the tools themselves. Yes, narcissists post stupid stuff, but what about the people who just want to inform their friends and family? I'm part of a club and we were able to discuss stuff on Facebook because we were not able to meet in person. Social networking sites are not all about attention hogs, after all...
Why do we come on here?
