Giving Black Sabbath's 13 a proper re-listen now that I've hooked my computer up to my beloved B&W DM7s. The production is audibly lacking in certain areas, especially the drums which are just too quiet and it's rather unfortunate because the drum work is exquisite and accentuates the riffs perfectly.
The previously sort-of dead bass has sprung to life almost magically though, it feels almost like listening to an entirely different album. Proper speakers also allow Tony's solo work to shine through with all its amazing might.

Hmmm would you strongly recommend '13'?? I dearly love Sabbath but my knowledge of them is very much confined to the first half of the seventies. In particular I really love the live album 'Past Lives', the tone is so heavy and really breathes even more dark atmosphere into the likes of 'Sweet Leaf' and 'War Pigs' and one of the highlights, a medley of 'Wicked World' including sections of 'Supernaut' and 'Into the Void'. Should I venture into modern Sabbath?

Currently enjoying some old metal, namely:

Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales
Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion
Mercyful Fate - Melissa
Mercyful Fate - Don't Break the Oath
and revisiting an old, underrated - if imperfect - favourite
Pantera - Power Metal, the highlight of this last one being'We'll Meet Again'.

I definitely think 13 is worth checking out. It stays true to the formula of the 70s albums with Tony's guitar sound being (sometimes literally) a mix of the original gritty fuzz and the post-Dio-era metallic snarl. You may not love it, but I'm sure you won't regret giving it a try.

Listening to this for the first time in a while: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jE-Hnv6Rm30

Seems like a template for Bosnian Rainbows, one of Omar's other bands.

This is neat! Reminds me of the 80s-90s action cop movie genre :P

Yeah, the 80's were three decades ago, so they are now eligible to be enjoyed retroactively.

Enjoy it while it lasts, because when 2020 rolls around, we're going to have to endure 5 years of retro-grunge.

Yeah Post-Grunge in the 1995-2005 era was bad enough...

Every time I listen to the Doors' Soft Parade, I can't help but fall in love with this criminally underrated album even more. There's something indescribably beautiful about the horns in Tell All The People and Jim Morrison's great take at a seemingly generic 60's love song in Touch Me, all followed by the silky smooth tones of Shaman's Blues. And don't even get me started about the title track - pure genius. It's all perfect. I'm absolutely getting this on vinyl ASAP, just you wait, ha.

I thoroughly enjoy 'the Soft Parade'. It is easily my least favourite of the six albums with Jim but that's not important. What's important is that 'Shaman's Blues' is an epic track - an understated foray into that pharmacological frontier being explored at that time with a myriad of substances including Ayahuasca (or Yage as they apparently called it at the time). Then 'Wishful Sinful' is an absolutely beautiful melody, giving this album a melancholy love song to almost rival those on their other five albums. Although initially affronted by the added instruments when I bought the album more than a decade ago, i have come to appreciate what they add to several tracks here - not just Wishful Sinful, but also 'Tell All the People' and 'Touch Me'. Some of the other tracks are a tad filler-ish, but I do enjoy 'Do It' quite a lot. Now, as for the final, title track, I sadly find it musically quite weak. The initial sections are very enjoyable - quite an 'Abbey Road'-esque way of presenting musical ideas. But the jam taking up the majority of the song is a little inferior, musically, to the other long tracks by the Doors (When 'The Music's Over', 'The End', and of course 'The Celebration of the Lizard'). Anyway it delights me to see this album paid some attention.
