Interestingly, he does not appear in the Hobbit book - in fact, he only features in the first lotr!

He is talked about in the Hobbit book, actually. Gandalf and Beorn both mention him.
Member since at least 1998 with... ah... some long absences. I was even a moderator at one point. I'll probably keep coming back here and there as long as this place still exists.

If I recall, he doesn't appear in either book, except by mention.

(Admittedly, I don't remember much.)

I haven't read them in a while, but I think Gandalf just meets him on the road near the beginning of Fellowship.
