Alright the miscellaneous section is my most posted in topic and music threads my most posted to thread. However in recent months to years I've been posting mostly Keen related stuff. The following post does not fully answer your question as I have of course many many favourites that continue in my rotation after years to decades. This post is about new additions to my regular rotation.

So let me dump a massive list of albums I've started listening to in the past couple of years. Broadly speaking, my habits have changed regarding music because 1) I started using spotify premium which frankly is an exemplary platform for rapidly broadening musical tastes. 2) I stopped buying CDs (I used to frequent the only remaining good independent store in Dublin (Freebird Records) and buy second hand CDs typically for 4 or 5 euro). I think the guy running the shop was amused at my persistence with the CD format despite it being unfashionable. My beloved mp3 player lies idle, its very existence fragile as it relies on a proprietary charging cable and would be null and void if said cable went missing. 3) After moving to England, my girlfriend bought me a record player as a present so now I delve through the numerous excellent record shops in London picking up all manner of discs (as well as occasional trips to other cities where second hand records are markedly cheaper than in London).

So in absolutely no intended order (apart from possibly alphabet) and categorised only by format (definitely not by genre as I listen to almost all genres), here are *some* of the albums I have had on persistent rotation since about 2018.

Compact Disc: "We Are Not Your Kind" - Slipknot.

Spotify: (these are just downloaded ones on my phone indicating that these ones have probably appealed to me most): "Alice In Hell" - Annihilator, "Never, Neverland" - Annihilator, "2 Future 4 U" - Armand Van Helden, "Suffer" - Bad Religion, "1999" - Cassius, "Le Dernier Crépuscle" - Chthe-ilist, "The Age of Quarrel" - Cro-Mags, "La La Means I Love You" - The Delfonics, "Sunday 8pm/Saturday 3am" - Faithless, "Reverence/Irreverence" - Faithless, "You've Come A Long Way Baby" - Fatboy Slim, "Better Living Through Chemistry" - Fatboy Slim, "Then Play On" - Fleetwood Mac, "America Eats Its Young" - Funkadelic, "One Nation Under a Groove" - Funkadelic, "Lifeforms" - The Future Sound of London, "Accelerator" - The Future Sound of London, "The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death" - The Housemartins, "Zen Arcade" - Hüsker Dü, "Flip Your Wig" - Hüsker Dü, "Candy Apple Grey" - Hüsker Dü, "New Day Rising" - Hüsker Dü, "Warehouse: Songs and Stories" - Hüsker Dü, "Black Moses" - Isaac Hayes, "Setting Sons" - The Jam, "Life Is Peachy" - Korn, "Issues" - Korn, "Untouchables" - Korn, "Storm The Studio" - Meat Beat Manifesto, "Up On The Sun" - Meat Puppets, "Dangerous" - Michael Jackson, "Everything Is Wrong" - Moby, "Silentintroduction" - Moodymann, "Introduction" - Mr. Fingers, "Zuma" - Neil Young, "Time Fades Away" - Neil Young, "Ready To Die" - The Notorious B.I.G., "In Sides" - Orbital, "Snivilisation" - Orbital, "Orbital" - Orbital, "Orbital 2" - Orbital, "Seven Ways" - Paul Van Dyk, "Disco" - Pet Shop Boys, "Their Satanic Majesties Request" - The Rolling Stones, "Double Dynamite" - Sam and Dave, "East Side Story" - Squeeze, "Boulevard" - St Germain, "Raw Power" -The Stooges, "Spirit of Eden" - Talk Talk, "Soul Mining" - The The, "Fear Inoculum" - Tool, "The Low End Theory" - A Tribe Called Quest, "People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm" - A Tribe Called Quest, "Midnight Marauders" - A Tribe Called Quest, "Dubnovasswithmyheadman" - Underworld, "Youth of America" - Wipers, "Is This Real" - Wipers, "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)" - Wu-Tang Clan.

Vinyl:: "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Messenger" - Elton John, "Hot Buttered Soul" - Isaac Hayes, "Shaft" - Isaac Hayes, "Chocolate Chip" - Isaac Hayes, "A Secret Wish" - Propaganda, "Hold On I'm Comin'" - Sam and Dave, "New Gold Dream" - Simple Minds, "Crusade" - John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, "Sailor" - Steve Miller Band (the one I have is some odd print of the Sailor album renamed "Living In the U.S.A."),"Lonely Girl" - Eddie Holman, "Close To The Bone" - The Tom Tom Club, "The Age of Consent" - Bronski Beat, "Welcome to the Pleasure Dome" - Frankie Goes to Hollywood, "Pleased To Meet Me" - Replacements, "Gala" - Lush, "Rio" - Duran Duran, "October" - U2, "Climbing!" - Mountain, "Nantucket Sleighride" - Mountain; a whole load of early Ultravox albums. Have a growing collection of great 12 inch singles from mostly 80s groups such as Depeche Mode, New Order and Pet Shop Boys as well as the excellent "Land Of Confusion" single by Genesis, "Your Love" - by Frankie Knuckles and "Chase" by Giorgio Moroder. I also received an excellent Christmas gift from a friend, a record from Japan called "Houses of the Unholy" by Church of Misery.

In an effort to digest the above excellent music I would suggest the following:
For the alternative/hard rock listener: The Wipers and Hüsker Dü (hopefully pckf can render the name properly with umlaut diacritics)
For the soul listener: "Black Moses" by Isaac Hayes
For the enthusiast of thrash metal, check out the first two albums by Annihilator.
For the rock music fans: for too many years I disregarded "Their Satanic Majesties Request" by the Stones as it is derided by so many. But don't disregard it. Although it lacks much of the direction and focus of the many Stones records preceding and following it, there is so much good stuff on this record and 100% worth a listen. I personally have disdain for most Britpop but if anyone is big into Britpop from the 90s then they will probably love "Their Satanic Majesties Request".

Now looking forward to 2021 where I hope to consolidate my love for the albums on the spotify list by finding some of them cheaply on vinyl. ( I was tantalised by a "La La Means I Love You" for six pounds however the disc had a massive visible scratch across one whole side so it was a no). Meanwhile I'll be discovering a whole lot more music via spotify. Of course, one of the hugest thrills in my opinion is discovering music for the first time directly from the vinyl. (Of the above, the Mayall and Miller albums amongst others are ones I had never heard before getting the LP). I'm not one of these people who put vinyl on an unwarranted pedestal. But for so many decades part of the presentation and the mystique of popular music has been in the physical item which you hold in your hand. Particularly second hand vinyls (ideally a pressing from roughly the same era as the music - I see no point in me personally paying above the odds for an absolute original pressing but something similar is nice. For instance my 1969 Sgt Pepper is more than good enough for me.)

I don't even think I could summarise this without a very long and very specific list. There are so many things I don't like that are basically the same kind of music as other stuff that I love.

These days I listen to a lot of nightcore, trance and j-pop but it's a very precise segment of those genres. EBM and alternative metal were among my primary genres for a while but they crash my mood too easily these days.

Definitely seeing a few familiar names through Syllypryde's and Benvolio's lists, including A Perfect Circle, Tool, Metallica, Slayer, Rob Zombie, Pantera, and Slipknot. Most of those artists would have songs featured in my 'top 100' for the past year. I'd be adding Megadeth, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest to the list as well, been a bit of a metal kind of time lately for me. I've also made a note of some of the other musicians listed as well, keen to expand my listening habits.

For something completely different, one of my favourite musicians is Ben Folds (and his former band, Ben Folds Five). I discovered his music around 2002 and it came a super pivotal time in my life growing up, so his songs (in particular from "Ben Folds Five", "Whatever And Ever Amen", and "Rockin' The Suburbs") are connected to a pretty significant time for me. It's one of those scenarios where songs somehow become intertwined with memories or experiences and are seemingly linked forever.

To round the list out, I also find myself listening to the soundtracks of various video games while I work lately. Soundtracks like Commander Keen 4 - 6, Duke Nukem II - 3D, Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure, Jazz Jackrabbit, Jill of the Jungle, and Xargon make up the majority of the list, though modern games like Infamous: Second Son and The Witcher 3 also get a regular play.

I don't think I've ever encountered EBM before, but I'm curious to give it a listen now.

I know pretty much nothing about EBM but I've liked a few songs by Nitzer Ebb (a band who were friends with Depeche Mode, one of my favourites) and of course I love the first NIN album which I believe to have elements of EBM in its style. Perhaps if Spleen has any good examples to guide us into further exploration beyong the most commercially prominent examples they would be welcome.

From a metal perspective, if like many metal listeners you like precursors/early exponents of metal (Sabbath, Zeppelin) then I strongly suggest checking out "Climbing!" by Mountain which basically is another contemporary of early Sabbath and Zep, totally different in style yet packing a hard rock/early metal punch whilst performing at an extremely high musical standard.

For those who like rock and roll and metal will notice my list spans several genres. I do like the classic rock, the 80's speed metal, thrash metal, death metal, grindcore, doom metal, groove metal, alternative, punk, and of course straight up rock and roll. I like some non-metal music on occasion as well. My list also consists of musicians who have performed in multiple bands, side bands of a main band, plus musicians that have a main band plus solo projects.

Though I've listened to female fronted or all-girl bands in the past, I have found myself discovering bands like this in the last few years or bands that didn't do much for me at the time they came out, but in the last few years are now getting my attention. Lacuna Coil and Arch Enemy are perfect examples of bands that I overlooked for decades and now I have most of their albums. Two female fronted bands in particular, Jinjer and Infected Rain have managed to make it to my top 5 favorite bands. I've had friends in the past tell me how it is nearly impossible to "pick up chicks" at metal concerts because they are mostly sausage fests. My response to all of them was "If we want to put more women in the audience then we need to put more women on the stage."

Not only is women in metal becoming more and more prevalent, plus blacks and other nationalities (who "stereotypically" would never listen to or play metal) are becoming more prevalent as well. This may seem like a strange thing to say considering musicians like Jimi Hendrix, Bo Diddley, the godfather of soul James Brown, and many of the Motown artists influenced the creation of classic rock, which then influenced 80's, 90's and even modern metal as well. Basically metal isn't just "white boy" music anymore and that is a good thing. Bands who span multiple genres within their music, adding their own heritage and creativity into the song writing is helping to make better and more entertaining music.

I wish Hollywood would get their heads out of their backsides and get creative again.

NIN and Depeche Mode are definitely bands I need to hear more of (not that anything's really been stopping me recently...). My first exposure to NIN was listening to "Germs" by Weird Al Yankovic and learning that it was a style parody based on "Closer" by NIN. Checked out a few songs, but this was in the early Kazaa days, so listening to a band's discography (as a young teenager without an income) was a bit difficult. The same is true for Depeche Mode actually, heard "Personal Jesus" in GTA San Andreas, enjoyed it and found a few other songs via P2P.

Appreciate the 'Mountain' recommendation, Benvolio, I can definitely hear the Zep similarities. I've had a listen to "Mississippi Queen" and "Yasgur's Farm" from the Climbing! album, as well as "Never In My Life" so far. Great recommendation.

Syllypryde, I'd say we have a pretty similar taste in music there. Regarding female-fronted music in particular, I've heard some of Lacuna Coil and Jinger, but am very interested to hear more. I'll add Arch Enemy and Infected Rain to the list as well. Are there any other female fronted or all-girl metal\rock bands you'd recommend?

Obviously I would definitely recommend all the bands I listed, female fronted or otherwise, so for now I will list the bands that I posted previously that fit into your request:

Deep Swell- It is a side band of the lead guitarist of Clutch, the singer is female, they only released one album

Jinjer- Female fronted from Ukraine

Infected Rain- Female fronted from Moldova

Dehydrated- female fronted from Russia

Butcher Babies- 2 female singers from the US

L7- All female punk band from US, 3 of the 4 members sing but the vocals are mostly done by Donita Sparks

Once Human- female fronted, the singer herself is from Australia

Agoraphobic Nosebleed- from 2007 to 2016 they had 3 singers, one of them was female, before ANb she fronted a band called Salome

7 Year Bitch- all female punk band from US, they only released 3 albums back in the 90's then they broke up

Abnormality- female fronted from US, just in the last month or two they posted on their Instagram page that they broke up, the singer herself has done other projects where she has sang, Castrator, Nidorous, and Parasitic Extirpation

Arch Enemy- Their original singer was male, but since 2000 they have had 2 more singers, both female, Angela Gossow is Swedish, Alissa White-Gluz is Canadian

Kittie- all female metal band from Canada, they haven't released an album since 2010 or 2011, not quite sure what their current status is

Lacuna Coil- 2 singers male and female, from Italy

Monochromatic Black- female fronted from US formed in 2018, right now all they have is a 6 song EP and a single, but are working on their debut full length

Of course there are dozens of others that I could also recommend. There are dozens of female metal vocalists out there that are great, but I haven't listed yet because I'm not necessarily a fan of the music itself they are singing over. I could list those women too if you would like.

@Spikenexus re: Depeche Mode you are in for a treat if you delve in. They're a very prolific band who have sustained a very high standard for decades. I think there is no one correct starting point because different listeners will like different stuff.

My starting point was the Violator album (1990) which has a few of their biggest hits including Personal Jesus. The album as a whole takes you to an introspective place. Not a particularly dark one but not a jolly or overly welcoming one either. Enjoyed my first few listens in bed during the nights of a dull rainy summer as a 19 year old.

Also at that time I got into the follow up, "Songs of Faith and Devotion" (1993) - in fact I had the live version (an unusual sort of release - a live performance of a studio album, both released in the same year as separate CDs). This album also takes you somewhere special with its spiritual atomsphere - never delving anywhere close to conventional Christian music territory and yet somehow Christ is never far away in the themes of the lyrics. This album takes you to a different place compared with 'Violator' - a warmer one, with considerably more emotion, yet very much in that Depeche Mode introspective vein that has the appearance of darkness but remains seemingly quite positive. "In Your Room" is probably my favourite and I think I still get more from the live recording.

I put these as top recommendations because they are where I started off. But then there's so much more. First a mention of the rest of the 1990s - I haven't devoted too much of my time to that era of DM yet but the quality is exceedingly high. Metalheads take note, to my ear it seems that their sound passed remarkably close to that of late 90s Korn - minus the bonecrunchingly heavy riffs of course. Maybe someone will hear this similarity.

And now five paragraphs in and I touch on the main decade of Depeche Mode. Every song they released in the 80s was good and most excellent. "Music For The Masses" (1987) is an iconic album with its Corbijn-directed black and white videos well worth checking out on Youtube. "Never Let Me Down Again" is probably their best song. Delving further back, the choices are excellent with song picks to prioritise if you're on the fence including "Stripped", "Shake The Disease", "Master and Servant", "Get The Balance Right" as well as some more obscure tracks like "Photographic" (album versiom particularly), "Two Minute Warning", "The Sun and the Rainfall", "Leave in Silence". What a rewarding band to get into and, COVID-19 allowing, very much active on a touring circuit with incredible stage energy and huge fan devotion to all band members - more so even in many non-Anglophone countries than in their native UK. I saw them in a stadium in Gelsenkirchen, Germany and would not hesitate to see them again.

Personally I've never been a fan of Depeche Mode, but just because I am not a fan doesn't mean I think they suck. They have shown to not only be talented musicians, but also are very passionate about the music they make and for that they have my respect. This is how I feel about all legitimate musicians because there are frauds out there who are doing it solely for the fame, solely for the money or doing it for the chicks. Legitimate musicians will have my respect regardless of whether or not I listen to a single note of their music.

Heh, it's been a while since I last responded to a music thread :)
Artists I like a lot, in no particular order:
Tame Impala, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, The Smiths, Rush, Prague, Cream, Dire Straits, Universe, Ozzy Osbourne, The Doors, Van Halen, Pink Floyd, The White Stripes, The Jimi Hendrix Experience... and the list goes on.
I also have several very large playlists of music I used to hear on the radio as a kid, divided by decade. I listen to those a lot. Then a dance/EDM playlist mostly consisting of 90s stuff because that's all I can stomach :p when dubstep took over I lost interest in the genre going forward.
Besides that I've always been into soundtracks from all kinds of media including video games, anime and TV series. And chiptunes, I love chiptunes.

The first band I ever bought an album by, I'm pretty sure I remember correctly, was King Crimson. As for more recent favourites I like Black Dresses a lot, and various solo stuff and other collaborations from that band's two members, Devi McCallion and Ada Rook. There are a lot more (I like Aphex Twin a lot, Radiohead and Thom Yorke's solo stuff, Yes, Jethro Tull, Car Seat Headrest, Cate Wurtz...) but I don't really wanna make a long list right now.
