Mean 18

Post by ckguy »

Mean 18 is an old (1986) DOS golf game, that (according to Wikipedia) claimed two firsts: first golf game with first-person-view, and first golf game with built-in course editor. I remember having quite a bit of fun with this maybe eight or nine years ago, and for some reason just thought of it again today. I was able to snag a copy here: :foot

The opening screen lets you know what you're getting into:

MEAN 18
Choose type of display:
  1. RGB monitor, 4 colors
  2. RGB/mono monitor, 16 greys
  3. Composite monitor, 16 colors
  4. EGA board, 16 colors
[/b]

This is old stuff, but still quite tasty.

Nice, never heard of this one. I still remember such display choices... :old

By the way, I don't know if such link should be allowed, so I'll edit it out just in case.

I don't think I'm familiar with this game.
I played "Links: The Challenge of Golf", judging by the graphics quite a bit later, and a game in the Leader Board series, which seem to be closer technology-wise.
Actually now that I figured out there was a series, I think I played two different generation... need to do more research.

I did already find out every time I want to type "golf", I've already finished typing "gold" instead.
It's strange how sometimes my brain gets these macros hard-coded in.
Often useful to not have to think while typing, but definitely not always.

Mean 18 isn't the game where you can add dinosaurs (just stationary obstructions, basically the same as trees) to your own courses, is it?
I played a game with that feature back in the day, but haven't been able to figure out what it's called. :(

Links was one of my favorite games back in my 386 days. I loved the introduction sequence. But I've grown tired of golf games since then. I should fire the game back up again sometime just to watch the intro...

Woah... those screeenshots contain some serious nostalgia. :celtic

Haha I remember starting and re-starting Links just to hear the little musical intro... :) I wonder if there's a MIDI of it floating around, somewhere.

It sounded like a module to me at the time, as opposed to MIDI. And the fact that it was ported from Amiga makes this seem more likely.

After searching around a bit, I haven't been able to find it. Apparently the PC version was composed by Brent Erickson, but no download seems to exist. Guess I'll just have to get the game again.

Damn you threadjackers. This thread is NOT about "Links."

*only a little bitter*

Not threadjacked.
