Cave Story
Cave Story
This game is fucling awesome. If you haven't played it, but enjoy platformers with a captivating plot and old 8-bit-styled gameplay and graphics, I highly recommend this game to you. It's free, it's indie, and it was made by one singly guy in a span of 5 years, released in 2004.

it's not a linux game. What DoConfig.exe does is to set up a wine configuration so that you could run the actual game, doukutsu.bin.
Edit: Nevermind, I'm stupid, doukutsu (no extension) is executable, no idea if it's secretly using wine or not.
They really need a manual for these things.
Edit Edit: I'm really stupid, both can be run outside of wine..
k i've got nothing.

I'd say that Cave Story gets such wild acclaim for a few reasons.VikingBoyBilly wrote:I wouldn't call it 8-bit, it's definitely smoother and nicer looking than that. It's an awesome game but ppl on the internetz rave over this thing like it's the rebirth of Balder.
First, it does the "linear route with exploration" thing pretty well--the learning curve is good, and the pacing is (mostly) superb. Second, it's got replay value on multiple fronts--from weapon choice to a complete hidden dungeon. Third, it's got just enough secret/hidden/unused stuff (Squid Medal? Curly's Underwear?) to keep an air of mystery about it.
It's not that it's the second coming of Balder. It's that it's a consistently pleasant presentation that is more engaging and delightful than many $60 modern releases. :)

The Windows version runs perfectly through Wine. I finished the game that way.Paramultart wrote:Doesn't run in Linux.
Who knows how old the Linux port is? Maybe it uses some versions of libraries that are now obsolete... Unless it's statically linked, in that case it's just hoping the included libraries work on your system.
If all else fails, run the program in a terminal and you'll usually get some meaningful output.
