I got trolled by Lemmings

Post by VikingBoyBilly »

When getting hopelessly stuck on one, abysmally designed level (UPSIDEDOWN WORLD), I decided to cheat and enter the password for map 30 of Mayhem (the last level). And it was much easier than some of the garg-forsaken maps that preceded it, but no less time consuming. The reason I did this? I stopped caring about beating all the levels and just wanted to see the ending, after more than 15 years of my pitiful life of never beating this game. After all, for a puzzle game as hard and famed as this one, the ending must be truly astounding. There's no way it could disappoint, after throwing so many nigh-impossible challenges to keep you away from it. Prepare to have your minds blown and all your rigidly-founded perceptions of life thrown out the window as the upcoming scene shakes your psyche to the very core of your being.

*SPOILER*

Here it is:

Then you're brought back to the title screen.

DMA and Psynosis, you've made my hitlist.
AND I'M NOT PLAYING "Oh no, more lemmings!" or "Lemmings Christmas Edition"!

And there are no achievements? No cinematic movies? No 3D? No boobs? No candies? Awww this game sux!.... And so this topic.

You cry like a baby. What were you expecting? Lindsay Lohan to strip for you? You're looking at the game in a wrong way. There is no story. There are no high quality graphics. It's just a simple and clever idea + plenty of hard levels to solve. You can't blame DMA. Back in 1989-1991 the games were all different thing. The ending was not that important. It was all about the skills. It was the fun (and new) gameplay.

If you want a better ending, try Lemmings 2. And for the record, there are many worse endings than this.

pwnd

This reminds me of finally discovering the ever so epic Keen 6 game over sequence, after years of being forced to use a trainer that gave you infinite lives. One of the most bitter, disappointing experiences in my life.

Well, I've made some research and the ending screen actually should be this:

Congratulations!
Everybody here at DMA Design salutes you
as a MASTER Lemmings player. Not many
people will complete the Mayhem levels,
you are definitely one of the elite

Now prepare to receive rapturous
applause from all here.

Dragon Quest 2 came out a year earlier, and after you beat the final boss every single NPC in the entire game gets a new line of dialogue to congratulate you. I spent hours wandering the world, tracking down random people to see what they'd say.

If i got that ending, I would feel like i did when i finally beet keen dreams.
Combine Garg and Apples in a bowl, simmer over medium heat for several years. Season with a pinch of regret.
