Apple would try to sue whoever does that and say it was their idea.

It has in fact been tried and been mooted many more times. The gist being that people, mostly lawyers, want formats to stay exclusive. This is why Open Office can read but not save into Word formats. (Even the reading has annoyed some.)

Wasn't there something like that for the OpenPandora?

Alternately there's stuff like these:

http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/f280/
not all platforms ever, but still a few

I save as MS Word (doc, not docx) from Open Office all the time! And from AbiWord! And WPS can even do docx!

Can't they make it convenient for a 3rd party addon that would allow the saving of .docx and then have that addon appear accidentally all over the internet?

I am not sure how successful that would be, the RIAA would probably sue everyone. (It's not music, but since when has that stopped them suing anyone?) http://paidcontent.org/2013/09/04/spoti ... ringement/

Indeed, .DOC is far more loosely held, in part because it was once the same format as .TXT. .docx is being guarded more closely.

If only people would stop buying into that strategy.

I have hated docx since becoming aware of its existence. The Vista + Office 2007 + docx era cemented my decision to cut Microsoft out of my life and that of others as much as possible (except for DOS of course, although I promote FreeDOS at every opportunity as well, although QuickBASIC 4lyf.)
