Converting AdLib tunes

Post by Batteryman »

If we had, .. we could have old game tunes in a different version. Some thinks it silly and someone likes me, just do it for fun.

Here is a video converting Duke Nukem 2 He's Back , from scratch, only having the IMF file converted to a midi file, and a soundfont of the FM instrument, using as a reference .
Also using Utopia Live Soundbank, a replacement for the Default midi soundbank
Like many other, is used in the midi driver, so i picked the Utopia one for this convertion.

The magic of fast motion, it tok me about an hour to record the video.
The finish midi version start at 04:00 in the video.

Welcome to the forums! (even though it looks like you joined a while ago)

This is some pretty nifty stuff! If you know how to work FL Studio, you're a wizard. This is a great project, and I hope to see more.

Thanks, the idea whas to make it sounds like the original but still different. If that make sense.. :P

Also using limited resources, like only use a 32 mb sound font in this video, you have to realy improvise. I had all the Monster Bash tunes converted in simmilar fashion, but in that case i used the Windows Default midi bank, thats only 3,5 mb. So i had to use many tricks to make it sound sweet, but the whole limitation gives it a kinda flavor, hence way forexample some tunes pepole like best on C64.

Interesting.

The pitch bends in the He's Back MIDI seem to be off though. What soundfont was used to play the He's Back MIDI in FL Studio? Sounds like the EdgeSounds GeneVoice GM64Pro.

I once converted the Duke 2 soundtrack to General MIDI format: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLA1mHqCzAg

Yes, my video does use the Utopia Live! version 2.0 soundfont. But for whatever reason, the soundfont in your video of He's Back sounds completely different; the drums and overdriven guitar are almost certainly from an EdgeSounds soundfont. Where did you obtain the soundfont, and what is its filename and/or internal name, and file size?

Thanks for the download link for the Monster Bash MP3s.

Now i'm not sure whatever soundfont i use, beacuse Edge is 64MB, Your soundfont Utopia live, witch i compared, sounds different in drums and distortion on the guitar. But what got my attention is the name sample "Odd guitar" what indeed whas a name of one of the instruments from Utopia live.. So whatever soundfont i have witch is 30,9 MB is clearly a different one, and its now named 32MbGMStereo.sf2, so i probly renamed it a long time ago, from something else. So if noboody know what it is, i might just release the soundfont to a link, since it have no commerical connections

Ah, that is indeed an EdgeSounds/NTONYX soundfont. Specifically, it is their "32Mb GM Stereo Set", which is freeware: http://www.ntonyx.com/sf.htm

Their soundfont has an error with the Steel Guitar; it is missing samples on key 55 (this can easily be fixed in Polyphone editor).

Indeed i can see your point.

I like to challange myself, so i'm trying to track down Gravis Ultra ROMs so i can make soundfont of them, and use them in other convertions
