Monster Bash E1L2 Hard playthrough (secrets included)

Post by spikey »

Hey folks,

I started playing Monster Bash from scratch this evening and couldn't be bothered getting the bonuses on level 2, because they are very difficult to get on Hard, and you usually lose too many lives. However I was surprised to see no one had gotten close to a complete level 2 playthrough vid on YouTube. So, I sucked it up and replayed the level again so people can see the secret areas and how to get to them (and so I can view it next time instead of all that jumping!).

The route is a little weird, but I find it's better to tackle the hardest part (i.e. the tree to the heavens) while you still have lives, before you do the second hardest (passageways), so you don't stress over doing the insane flying and jumping at the end. Either way, tough level on Hard!

Thought some of you might be interested, it took me years to find out how detailed the level was.

I just watched the whole video and I'm really amazed you did everything with only one live lost.
I remember when I played Monster Bash the first time, I could not finish the level for long time because I could not find the exit. I had absolutely no idea I needed to crouch and crawl through the log in the lower-right corner of the map (some time later my friend found the way). While searching for the exit I discovered the flying platforms on the right side and later also that I could jump on the stormy clouds. I tried zillion times to jump through all the way (and lost many lives, I was playing easy game), then finally managed it and eded up finding out it's only a well-made secret, not an exit.
Even later when I played through all the game again it took me several tries to reach that super-secret, so seeing you beating it at the first try made me astonished.

True but YouTube absolutely destroys any videos uploaded lower than 480p.

It's 360p, and looks fine to me, just loaded it. It's a DOSBox capture of an old game, so not going to be HD!

Hisymak: Thanks for the comments, and not about video res!
To be honest, I'd played the level already that evening twice. Once I died too much, like 2-3 times, the next I screwed up the secret area (all the blocks fell down from the first broomstick area).
Then when I went online to see someone doing it so I didn't have to, I was amazed that many players found the sky area but didn't bother actually finishing it, even though it was a Let's Play or similar. Most just fell.

To be fair to myself though, that video was taken in one go after I got off YouTube in disgust at the lame MB players, not several. But 3rd time that evening.

Uuuh... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdGWhTvbZAY ?

Or do you mean 'complete' as in 100%?

Complete as in completionist, i.e. Skull and Loot Bonuses. I don't worry about Par Times.

I was pretty surprised that not one YT vid had people exploring the full level, to be honest. Apogee games were popular and people with GOG have more opportunity than ever to play oldies.
Not to mention it's E1L2, a level that any MB player has likely played.

OK, I've made a quick video just to show you:

Don't you see a difference in the quality between this and your video? You can use OBS software to record your videos. It's an excellent recording and streaming tool.

I don't see a whole lot of quality difference TBH, although yours is the better one. Sound is better in mine though.

Anyway, if anyone has non-video quality comments, let me know.

Thanks :) Just finished Episode 2 on Hard for the 3rd time in my life. Only ever finished Ep 3 once, and maybe not on Hard. Guess that's next :)
Bio for me is slightly harder than Monster Bash on Hard, mainly because there's more enemies, and the game compromises your upgrades on Hard. But I've beaten those first 2 ep's frequently. Always get stuck on Circle of Death in ep 3 though.

On Monster Bash:
I did find one level in the first 2 ep's where I couldn't figure out how to get the bonuses- the Loot Bonus on E2L8, Igor's Lab (the level right before Igor). There's these peppermints between electrical wires, and you can't jump that high. There's a brain monster (the one that increases your health with his trigonometry shots), but I don't think he can help you jump higher. Just don't see any way to do it. (Once again, no one on YouTube does anything but suck on this level.)

I can't believe there isn't a map of Monster Bash E2L8 on VGMaps.com.
