In all honesty I've never been a big fan of Nirvana. I will always give them their props for being pioneers in punk and grunge. Lena Scissorhands of Infected Rain and Death Dealer Union did a cover of Aero Zepplin. I really like the cover. Since cover songs are not usually as good as the originals I went back to Nirvana's version of the song. Now it is one of the few Nirvana songs I can get into. Nirvana songs I like:

Negative Creep
Smells Like Teen Spirit (though at the time it was released it was so overplayed I got so sick of it. It wasn't until a few years ago I heard it again for the first time in decades that I started to like it again.)
Come as You Are
Territorial Pissings
Aero Zepplin
All Apologies

After listening to their 2 albums I mentioned above, I have to go along with you on that. There's no denying the influence they had on the music world, and like you said, they do have good songs, but there's also a lot of tracks that either aren't interesting, boring, or just downright annoying. Just like you, I'm a fan of a few of their songs, but as a whole not so much. I like all the tracks you mentioned, plus maybe 2 or 3 others. While I'm at it, I don't think Kurt was the saint his fans make him out to be. I mean, what could be more wholesome than seeing home movies of him holding his infant son while nodding off? Not to mention the threatening calls/messages he was leaving people.

First of all that Aero Zeppelin cover is so garging cool, thank you for telling us about it.

Now regarding Kurt and Nirvana, what they are is one of the biggest cases of an artist's reputation being warped by the press and by extension the general public. The story of how the troubled child Kurt grew into a young adult afflicted with drug addiction, mental illness and psychosomatic symptoms of same, deteriorating into a suicidal downward spiral, is well documented. The irresponsible nature of his fatherhood and the love-hate relstionship Kurt had with his commercial success is known to all who paid attention at the time. The solid good-natured characters of his bandmates Krist, Dave and Pat has been rightfully recognised and appreciated by the masses in the intervening decades.

But the idea of Kurt as a "saint" and Nirvana as progenitors of something completely new, is rejected by most who have truly lived life to music of Nirvana. Such fans prefer to see and appreciaye the reality. There is so much to be learned from his flaws and limitations. Pretending he was something he wasn't is commonplace and just erodes the lessons.

What Kurt was, was a huge advocate for numerous highly worthwhile and under-recognised musical artists of the punk and post punk genres, of the entire 1980s and early 1990s. Through cover versons and namechecks he gave many of these artists a boost to their audience size, something many appreciated.

As I have delved through many of these over the years since my first pre teen encounters of Nevermind, I have appreciated Nirvana'a music as a scrapbook full of flavours from hundreds of fascinating bands, melted together then tied into something fresh and worthwhile by the band's energy and genuine songcraft skill, leaving us with valuable entertainment but certainly not with some sort of new "gospel" to swear by.

I hope people can continue to scratch below the surface to see the reality of what those men were like. There was so much dry humour involved - their video interviews on YouTube are well worth watching. This is particularly important the era of gen Z and soon alpha, whose favourite fast fashion retailers are flooding the streets with Nirvana shirts, in the UK at least.

Recently I've been listening to Camel a lot, specifically Mirage. Something about the way they touched upon fantasy themes and the beautiful dramatic melodies in songs like Nimrodel or Earthrise, the soft veiled vocals, the lively bass lines, it's just a magical perfect masterpiece. I've been constantly coming and going from prog rock as a genre for a long time now on my journey in music but the beauty of these compositions makes me wonder what kind of talent and artistic instinct it takes to come up with something like this. If I knew what to do, I'd try to steer my band in that direction creatively.

At least the bass parts aren't overly difficult, so I can just enjoy playing them by myself and imagine what could be if I were a better writer. :D

Maybe it's time I actually shared some of my own listening. I almost have many times, but I just wasn't ready to before. I am very particular about music and how it connects to my soul, especially with lyrics. Because of this, I used to worry that sharing the music I really connected with would reveal much more about myself than I was willing to share, but I realize now that even if the content of the song is similar it can't reveal the specifics of my situation without extra context. In any case, I'm not so insecure about people knowing how I feel anymore.

I've mentioned I've had a wild last few months here but I don't think I'll end up posting about it in detail. Instead, I think I will let the music speak for me for the most part.

"Brother" by NEEDTOBREATHE -- I heard this one for the first time on a radio and got hooked on the raw passion in the chorus. "Let me be your shelter, never leave you all alone." The timing was incredible because 2 days after I found this song, I unexpectedly ended up couch surfing for a week or two, and it was a comfort to me in that.
"HARD LOVE" by NEEDTOBREATHE -- Found this one while trying to look up the first song. Again, incredible timing. It came up as I was trying to quiet my nerves after taking a stand on what I felt I should do. I could feel the fallout brewing and I knew I wasn't going home that night. "In the morning you're gonna need an answer." I wouldn't have ever found this sort of song encouraging before, but it's like it was written for my exact moment then.

There were quite a few songs that really resonated with me at different points in the months following that event, but I'll just highlight the ones that capture the broadest part of my experience, of hard times and hope. In chronological order of discovery:

"HAPPINESS" by NEEDTOBREATHE
"To The Dreamers" by For King & Country
"Counting Stars" by OneRepublic
"What You Know" by Two Door Cinema Club
"Friendly. Very friendly. Too friendly." Image

If you liked that song, then I think you should check out Lena Scissorhands with her primary band Infected Rain, side band Death Dealer Union, her guest vocals with Seas on the Moon, Anotherkind, Vervain St. Project to name a few. If you're into progressive metal then you will probably dig it.

What have I been listening to for the last week?
Cannibal Corpse- Chaos Horrific LP
Death Dealer Union- Initiation LP
Tarja Tununen Feat. Cristina Scabbia- Goodbye Stranger
Suffocation- Serpahim Enslavement
L7- Cooler Than Mars
