How would it feel to make Keen stuff in Wolf3d / Doom mods

Post by JM2006 »

I'm thinking about something like this for the future.

Currently I'm making Wolf3d mods and I'm a long time keen fan.

I originally was planning secret levels on Keen in my last Wolf3d mod which I brought out in June last year.

My mod was Retribution of the Overlord which was a Wolf3d mod based on Blake Stone Stuff and I put in some keen textures with some of my own stuff.

Seeing Keen 1-3 had different guns, I am thinking up of something :)

Some Wolf3D mods already had Keen levels/tributes

"Blade of Agony", which is a Doom mod - had Keen levels interpretations in 3D.

I think it might feel a little odd, in the Keen games movement mechanics are the main focus rather than shooting/combat mechanics. You have running, jumping, pogoing, climbing poles, climbing ledges, surfing platforms (in Keen 5 at least...) meanwhile the only interesting aspect of shooting is that Keen can shoot in any direction. In the early not-quite-3D games like Wolf or Doom, movement is very limited due to what the engine can allow so it might be hard to translate that sort of keenishness aspect to it.

Blade of Agony looks good. I'm still yet to try it. It's definitely a groundbreaker.

It's mostly the tiles I'm using in Wolfenstein 3d, not basing them off Commander Keen but adding tiles for illustration, given Keen 5 and 6 had some decent ones for Sci-Fi.
