A typical situation in some levels:
You open a switch for a bridge and other player falls onto a hazard and dies. How does the game know that it's you who killed the another player, not just hazard, so player falling into Tar in Keen4 Netkeen counts as YOUR kill because it's YOU who opened the bridge while other player was crossing it?"
How does Netkeen count "kills"?

Re: How does Netkeen count "kills"?
I haven't played NetKeen, but I think since it would be an indirect kill, the game just thinks that the other player died on their own, so it will deduct 1 from the player who died's kill count. I don't think the game would have the capability to tell who flipped the bridge open.
Put me in a room full of chlorine. Results: I die and turn into a pillar of salt and a very buggy Keen 6.

Usually in gaming (hope I'm not telling something new) - self kill just depletes player kill count.

Re: How does Netkeen count "kills"?
Yeah, NetKeen tracks the "attacker" for each thing which damages a player. Only the last piece of damage which kills a player counts for scoring purposes: if that's a hazardous tile, the "attacker" is set to -1, and the player who died will lose one kill from their score (if "hazard death penalty" is enabled in the game options, otherwise it doesn't affect the score at all).
There's no extra tracking for what/who might have caused a player to enter a deadly tile (or fall off the bottom of the map, which is treated the same way).
