Commander Keen HD Remake
Re: Commander Keen HD Remake
My spritesheet from almost 20 years ago that has (among the rest) some Keen related items in higher resolution

P.S.
Huge tileset from my Game Maker project from over 20 years ago (2005) - if anyone will find it useful

Re: Commander Keen HD Remake
Hey Maxim thanks for the sharing,
I'm working in the same resolution as the original sprites. So, This "HD" is not about resolution, more about a certain color palette.
If you know the Crystal Caves HD Remake by Emberheart Games, this Is what I'm aiming for with Commander Keen HD remake.
Thanks anyways, even if it wasn't useful.

Can by any chance any of these be used?DoomJedi wrote: Wed Aug 05, 2026 15:29 My spritesheet from almost 20 years ago that has (among the rest) some Keen related items in higher resolution

Re: Commander Keen HD Remake
So it's about increasing color depth and using wider color selection to make the colors match more, transition smoother and have less cartoony vibrancy, more muted, realistic so to speak.
Nice.
We did used muted 256 color palette in one of our Batman mods, removed that palette since.

Muted 256 palette is sure more than enough to any proper Keen remake.
I have pretty nice collections of 8-bit palettes.
So where exactly is the main challenge? Applying palette? Recoloring? Adding color depth?

Hey,
look at that maybe Roobar has some use of them
@DoomJedi
You nailed it, perfectly summarized.
I'm not sure how to take you question about the challenge.
If it was meant direct and honest. Trusting the process and flow. Maybe being bold with darker colors and for example working around the palettes limitations. e.g. blue clothes of the vorticon grunt 1 and the blueish skin color (Had to darken the cloth). Or that It took me seven vacuum cleaner variations, to be happy
It's mostly grinding and there's no outstanding skill level required, maybe besides some creativity and feeling for the custom episode I'm planing.
The real challenge will be to get it official
and as close as possible to the the Crystal Caves HD remake, I consider that one as a perfect remake.

Re: Commander Keen HD Remake
I wonder can we make these somehow in a fanmade remaster? Isn’t CGenius capable of loading sprite and texture patches?
Re: Commander Keen HD Remake
Hey,
my plan was to finish all assets and afterwards see what I can do with it.
But I would love to use it for something bigger than just a asset mod. The plan would be a full HD remake with a custom 4th episode and new game mechanics.
I'm aware of CGenius. But think It has some issues, e.g. I was able to jump backwards with looking forward?
I also know of other project like Chocolate Keen. We will see.

One way or another - I will play that
Re: Commander Keen HD Remake
I agree. CGenius is a bad choice.
