Any recommendations for a newbie?

Well, not a newbie to Keen, but to fanmade Keen mods. I've finally played ceilick's Keen 7 + 8, which I was greatly impressed by, and now I'd like to try some more. What are some of the better ones out there and where could I find them? Thanks.

Glad you enjoyed my keen 4 and 6 mods.

A lot of mods are great, but I'd consider these the cream of the crop:

Aliens vs Keen, Keen X, Monkey Business Demo, Keen Null, and A New Dope.

I could also recommend 'Hiding from the Sky', 'Search for the Sentinel' and the 'Decree of the Skree' trilogy. These are good newcomer's choices to Keen 1-3 mods.

If you're into hard levels, 'Keen Q', 'Episode Smile' and 'Keen Y' are on my favourite list.

As you liked Keen 8 and 9, you'll probably like 'Perilous Pursuit', cause it fakes Keen 4-6 graphics, but you'll need dosbox for that one, or you'll run into memory problems.

They're all in the link provided by Ceilick.

If you're REALLY going for hard, try Keen -6, by me. 8)
