Impossible Bullet in Keen 4

Post by StevenAnzalone »

I'm a lurker, I just made a quick account to show you a video I made. I've managed to (kind of) reproduce the "Impossible Bullet" bug from Keen 6 in Keen 4.

I don't think anyone has ever done this before, so... you're welcome!

Wow! How strange. A really good find, though.

PS. Why lurk when you have such a friendly and welcoming community to join? :)

I like being an unknown outcast, it's just my nature. I don't like to dabble in forumtry, even of a friendly nature. :p

This is a great find, excellent work! Do you think it could also work on Keen 5?

Should do, the bullet error is the same in all 3 engines.

Yep it is the same way that it does work in Keen5 (see Keen Asylum where you have to do it that way in one level)

I did wonder why the trick should work in Keen 6 and not Keen 4-5 - it's not like they remade the thing from scratch...

mind = blown

I had thought there must be some difference in the sprite clipping or an ever so slight modification to the code that made the IPB impossible in 4-5. Last I heard, which was albeit a few years ago, it was declared Keen 6 only.

My theory as to why standard IBT only works in Keen 6 is that Keen 6 has you jump on and bump your head on switches. The extra code needed for these new collision/clipping things introduced the bug that allows you to actually stand on your bullet in certain situations. Keep in mind that I have no real basis for this theory, it's just ... a feeling that may be completely wrong.

The IBT in Keen6 comes from a similar property of standing on a Gik or flipping a switch.

In the video, you can see that Steven shoots and hits the floor (with excellent timing, BTW) while standing on a Goplat, making the trick working even with Keen4 in (nearly) the same mode of Keen6...

Might have something, that theory.

Keen 6 came first remember? That code may well have been removed for this very reason, not removing the IB at its source, but just the easiest way to do it.

Ctrl+Alt+F5 - I can never remember either and have to look it up...

[EDIT]It saves to the DOSBox Capture folder, which should be linked to in the Start Menu folder that you launch DOSBox itself from...
